Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Review – Better Than I Expected?

I'll be honest—I almost skipped the Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta.

Before downloading it, I'd already seen plenty of mixed reactions online. Some players called it outdated, while others felt it was simply "more of the same." After reading those comments, I wasn't expecting much.

Still, I wanted to see whether those early opinions matched the actual experience, so I spent a few hours with the Open Beta.

The first few matches didn't immediately change my mind. The movement felt heavier than most modern shooters, and getting used to the classic cover-based combat took some time. But the more I played, the more enjoyable it became. Once I settled into the rhythm, every firefight felt rewarding, and before I knew it, I was queuing for "just one more match."

Gears of War: E-Day doesn't reinvent the franchise, but it doesn't need to. Instead, it builds on the gameplay that made the series popular in the first place. If you're still deciding whether to join the beta, be sure to check out our Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Start Date & How to Get Access guide before jumping in.

Gameplay Review

Classic Gears Gameplay Still Works

The biggest surprise during my time with the Open Beta wasn't a brand-new mechanic—it was how enjoyable the classic Gears formula still feels.

The cover-based combat remains the core of every firefight. Instead of encouraging players to constantly sprint across the map, Gears rewards smart positioning, careful pushes, and teamwork. At first, that slower pace felt unfamiliar after spending so much time with faster multiplayer shooters. However, after a few matches, I started appreciating the tactical approach that has always defined the series.

Once the gameplay clicked, every fight became far more satisfying. Winning a close-range Gnasher duel or coordinating a successful team push felt rewarding in a way that many modern shooters struggle to replicate.

The weapon balance also feels familiar in the best way possible. The Lancer Assault Rifle remains reliable at medium range, while the Gnasher Shotgun continues to be the star of close-quarters combat. Longtime fans should feel comfortable almost immediately, while newcomers may simply need a few matches before everything starts to feel natural.

Perhaps my favorite aspect was how much teamwork influences every match. Players who communicate, revive teammates, and move together consistently outperform those trying to carry games alone. That's exactly what I expect from a Gears multiplayer experience.

Horde Siege Is the Standout Mode

If there's one mode that convinced me to keep playing, it's Horde Siege.

I originally planned to spend equal time across every playlist, but I kept finding myself returning to Horde Siege because it offered the most memorable matches. Instead of simply defending one position against endless waves, the mode encourages squads to move around the map, complete objectives, and react to changing situations.

That extra variety keeps every match feeling fresh. Some rounds became desperate last-minute defenses, while others turned into coordinated pushes that required the whole team to work together.

More importantly, Horde Siege showcases what Gears of War does best. Every role feels useful, every revive matters, and teamwork often determines whether your squad succeeds or fails.

Although the beta only includes a limited amount of content, Horde Siege alone gave me plenty of reasons to keep playing long after I originally planned to stop.

Graphics & Performance

Visuals

Gears of War: E-Day is easily one of the best-looking games in the series. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the Open Beta already showcases impressive environmental detail, realistic lighting, and high-quality character models. Every battlefield feels gritty and immersive, while explosions, smoke effects, and flying debris make firefights look even more intense.

I was particularly impressed by how much atmosphere the lighting adds to each map. Whether moving through dark ruins or fighting across war-torn streets, the environments constantly reinforce the brutal tone that Gears of War is known for.

While the beta doesn't include a huge variety of maps, the overall visual quality already feels ready for a full release, and it's easy to see the leap compared to older entries in the franchise.

Performance During the Open Beta

From a technical perspective, the Open Beta performed better than I expected. Throughout my play sessions, frame rates remained stable most of the time, and I didn't encounter any major crashes or game-breaking bugs.

Of course, this is still a beta, so there are a few rough edges. Matchmaking occasionally took longer than expected, and I noticed a handful of minor animation glitches during combat. Hit registration also felt slightly inconsistent in a few close-range fights, although it wasn't something that happened often.

None of these issues significantly affected my overall experience. They're exactly the kind of problems an Open Beta is meant to identify before launch, and hopefully they'll be addressed in the final release.

Overall, the technical foundation already feels solid, giving me confidence that the finished game will launch in even better shape.

Pros & Cons

Pros

Cons

Classic cover-based gameplay remains as satisfying as ever.

The beta currently offers limited maps and game modes.

Horde Siege is a fantastic addition and easily the best mode available.

Matchmaking can occasionally take longer than expected.

Excellent visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5.

New players may need time to adjust to the slower movement.

Teamwork-focused gameplay rewards strategy over pure aim.

Minor animation and hit registration issues still appear occasionally.

Is the Open Beta Worth Playing?

Absolutely. While I understand why some players weren't impressed after their first few matches, my own experience was completely different once I spent more time with the game.

The Open Beta doesn't try to chase current multiplayer trends or completely reinvent Gears of War. Instead, it focuses on refining the series' signature gameplay, and I think that's exactly the right direction. The slower pace, tactical cover system, and satisfying gunplay create an experience that stands out in a market full of fast-paced shooters.

Is it perfect? Not yet. More maps, additional game modes, and some matchmaking improvements would certainly make the experience even better. But those are exactly the kinds of things an Open Beta is designed to test.

If the final game builds on what's already here, Gears of War: E-Day has the potential to become one of the strongest multiplayer entries in the franchise.

Conclusion

When I first downloaded the Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta, I expected to confirm many of the negative opinions I'd seen online. Instead, I walked away with a completely different impression.

The biggest lesson I learned is that this beta deserves more than just a couple of matches. The gameplay may feel slow at first, but once you understand its rhythm, everything starts to come together. The cover-based combat, satisfying weapon balance, and emphasis on teamwork gradually reveal why Gears of War has remained popular for so many years.

There are still areas that need polishing before launch, but the core gameplay is already incredibly enjoyable, and that's ultimately what matters most. Rather than reinventing the franchise, The Coalition has focused on improving the formula that longtime fans already love—and based on my experience, it's a decision that pays off.

If you haven't tried the Open Beta yet, I'd definitely recommend giving it a chance before making your final judgment.
