A day before the official reveal, an image reportedly circulating on Bilibili had already leaked the same January 15 date, along with mention of pre-order rewards. NetEase's confirmation at Gamescom matched that leak almost exactly, so the community had a decent heads-up this was coming.

From Project Mugen to a Confirmed 2027 Launch

Ananta has a longer history than its final name suggests. It was first unveiled as Project Mugen at Gamescom 2023, and the game didn't take on its current title until November 2024, when NetEase rebranded it and opened pre-registration. Since then, it's been through an offline tech test in China, a Tokyo Game Show 2025 appearance, and multiple gameplay trailers, all without a firm release window. The Gamescom 2026 announcement closes that gap and gives players an actual date to plan around, just under five months out.

Timing-wise, the date is notable for one reason in particular: it lands roughly two months after GTA 6's November 19 release. Since Ananta is free and GTA 6 carries an $80 price tag, some players see this less as direct competition and more as a natural next stop for anyone still working through Rockstar's game come January.

What Ananta Actually Is

Ananta casts players as Captain, a member of a struggling peacekeeping outfit called the A.C.D. (Anti-Chaos Directorate). After the agency collapses almost as soon as you join it, and you go viral online for accidentally causing a public mess, the story sends you down an unusual path: rebuilding the A.C.D. and tracking down your missing father by becoming, of all things, an internet influencer. It's a strange premise on paper, but it fits the tone of a game that leans into humor as much as action.

Progression revolves around fame. Completing story missions, taking on bounties, finishing side quests, and even smaller actions like snapping selfies with NPCs all build your reputation, which in turn unlocks new missions, resources, and influencer-specific perks. It's an unusual spin on the typical RPG progression loop, and it ties directly into the social-media theme running through the marketing.

Combat and traversal both lean into improvisation. Players can grab everyday objects like guitars, trash bins, or golf clubs and turn them into weapons, disarm enemies mid-fight, and chain dodges and counters for flashier kills. Movement is built around what the developers call the 3C system, letting players move fluidly across three vertical layers of the city, whether that's rooftop chases, street-level driving, or diving into subway tunnels. Outside combat, players can also step into different roles around the city, including police officer, hacker, livestreamer, or delivery worker, each with its own objectives and way of experiencing Nova City.

Two Cities: Nova City and Chongxiao

Nova City remains the game's flagship location, a sprawling metropolis compared frequently to GTA's Vice City or Los Santos. It's packed with district-specific content: the Sonic Boom Club, the Whalebone Library, and the Eve Gallery among them, each tied to different stories and activities.

Nova City

Chongxiao is the newer reveal, and it takes the game in a different direction. Drawing visual inspiration from cities like Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Chongqing, Chongxiao trades Nova City's neon-soaked nightlife for a more traditional Eastern aesthetic, with martial arts, including Shaolin kung fu, playing a much bigger role in combat here. The area is also said to house over 100 NPCs with their own individual stories and side quests, with strong enough relationships letting players recruit citizens into the A.C.D.

Chongxiao

Team composition matters too. Players assemble a squad of four playable characters, referred to as Espers, and swap between them in combat, a structure that will feel familiar to anyone who's played Genshin Impact or Zenless Zone Zero. Notably, character acquisition for Espers has been confirmed to work outside a traditional gacha banner, according to earlier reporting from Famitsu, even though the game is described elsewhere as free-to-play with gacha elements for other systems.

Pre-Registration Rewards

Pre-registration is already live on Ananta's official site and via Steam wishlist, and it comes with a milestone reward system based on total sign-ups. As of the Gamescom reveal, the count had already passed 15 million, unlocking the first tier.

Milestone

Reward

15,000,000

10K Golvent (in-game currency)

20,000,000

Clothing dye

25,000,000

Profile card

30,000,000

100 Jillion Vouchers

A final reward, a unique outfit, unlocks at 35 million pre-registrations. Given how quickly the count climbed past the first few tiers, reaching that final milestone before launch seems likely.

Why This Release Date Matters

A confirmed January date gives Ananta a cleaner runway than most anime-style live-service launches get. Landing after GTA 6 rather than competing directly with it, while also being free-to-play, positions the game to catch players looking for something new once they've had their fill of Rockstar's game. It also gives NetEase and Naked Rain a firm deadline to finish polishing systems that are still light on detail, including the exact mechanics behind character progression and how monetization will work outside the confirmed non-gacha Esper system.
