Defense logs looking a little too red lately? Yeah, we figured.

Season 3 of Crafted Defenses just dropped—and no, it's not an April Fool's joke. Supercell pulled three absolute nightmares from the Builder Base and dropped them into your Home Village. The Roaster. Air Bombs. Lava Launcher.

You can only pick one. And your choice is going to define your defense for the next four months.

Let's figure out which one you need.

What Are Crafted Defenses?

What Are Crafted Defenses?

If you’re new to the Crafted Defense system, here’s the short version: these are temporary, high-impact defenses that rotate every season. You build a Crafting Station, pick one of three available defenses, and then upgrade it through three different modules (Hitpoints, Damage, and a unique trait like Range, Burst Count, or Attack Speed) .

They’re not permanent—when the season ends, they disappear and convert into Sparky Stones for the Fancy Shop. But for the next four months? They’re your secret weapon .

Last season gave us Hero Bell, Light Beam, and Bomb Hive. And yeah, we’re still mourning Bomb Hive. That thing was a nightmare for Royal Champion charges, and its absence is going to shake things up more than people realize .

But let’s not cry over spilled elixir. Here’s what’s replacing them.

The Contenders: Three Builder, One Choice

Air Bombs: The Sky Cleaver

Air Bombs

Targets: Air troops only

Damage Type: Splash (barrel drops)

Max Level Stats: 6,000 HP | 950 damage per hit | 2-second attack cooldown

If you’ve ever watched a mass Dragon or Balloon attack sail through your base like it’s nothing, the Air Bombs are your answer.

This thing launches barrels into the sky that explode on contact, dealing splash damage to anything flying nearby. At max level, it’s dishing out 950 damage per hit—enough to make even a max Dragon think twice before getting too close.

Upgrade Modules:

  • Hitpoints: Get this high enough to survive a Giant Arrow snipe. Standard rule of thumb: a couple of levels usually does it.
  • Damage per hit: This is your priority. Higher damage means fewer shots to delete air troops.
  • Attack Cooldown: Drops to 2 seconds at max, which is terrifying .

Best For: Anyone getting wrecked by Electro Dragon spam, Dragon Rider pushes, or LavaLoon. If your defense log is full of air attacks, this is your pick.

Why It’s Interesting: Unlike standard Air Defenses (single-target), Air Bombs deal splash damage. That means a clump of Balloons or Dragon Riders is going to have a very bad time. Against high-HP troops like Super Dragons, it’s less devastating, but the sheer DPS adds up fast .

Lava Launcher: The Ground Scorcher

Lava Launcher: The Ground Scorcher

Targets: Ground troops only

Damage Type: Splash + ground burn over time

Max Level Stats: 4,900 HP | 125 DPS (burn) | 875 damage per direct hit | 20-tile range

This is the one that scares me.

The Lava Launcher doesn’t just hit your troops—it leaves a burning crater where it lands. Any ground unit standing in that zone takes continuous damage over time. And at max range? Twenty tiles. That’s almost the entire map.

Think about that for a second. A centrally placed Lava Launcher can cover your Town Hall, your core defenses, and half your base while you’re still setting up your Queen walk.

Upgrade Modules:

  • Range:This is your top priority. Get it to 20 tiles as fast as possible. The ability to reach across the entire base is what makes this defense special .
  • Hitpoints:4,900 HP at max is solid, but you’ll want it high enough to survive the early stages of an attack.
  • Damage per second:Important, but secondary to range. The burn damage adds up, especially if troops get stuck in it.

Best For: Anyone facing a lot of ground spam—Root Riders, Electro Titan Smash, Super Bowlers, and especially the dreaded Thrower meta that’s been popping up in Ranked Mode .

Why It’s Interesting: You can’t just invis through it. The burn damage keeps ticking even if your troops are invisible, which makes this a hard counter to Warden charges and Flame Flinger strategies . Pair it with a Poison Tower near your Town Hall, and you’ve got a kill zone that even maxed heroes will struggle to survive.

Roaster: The Chaos Machine

Roaster

Targets: Ground and air troops

Damage Type: Burst splash (15 consecutive shots at max)

Max Level Stats: 6,000 HP | 95 damage per hit | 15-shot burst

The Roaster is your all-rounder. It hits everything, deals splash damage, and fires in rapid bursts that can wipe out swarms before they even know what hit them.

If you’re the kind of player who wants one defense that does it all—no thinking, no worrying about whether the enemy is bringing air or ground—this is your pick.

Upgrade Modules:

  • Hitpoints:6,000 HP makes it one of the tankiest defenses in the game, rivaling the Revenge Tower .
  • Damage per hit:Higher damage means each burst hurts more.
  • Burst count:At max, it fires 15 shots in a row before resetting. That’s a lot of plasma flying at your enemies.

Best For: Players who face a mix of attack strategies and don’t want to overthink their defense pick. It’s the safe choice—but safe isn’t always bad.

Why It’s Interesting: The Roaster’s burst mechanic means it’s particularly nasty against swarm troops. Witches, Bats, Minions, and even Goblin spam will get shredded. But against high-HP single targets like heroes or Electro Titans, it’s less effective .

The Meta Shift: What Changes With Season 3?

The Meta Shift: What Changes With Season 3?

Here’s where things get spicy.

The removal of Bomb Hive from the rotation is arguably bigger news than what we’re getting. Why? Because Bomb Hive was the main thing keeping Royal Champion charges in check .

Think about it: with Bomb Hive, your RC couldn’t just invis through a base. The bombs kept hitting her even while she was invisible, which made RC charges risky at best. Without it? She’s back in business.

Combine that with the new Dragon level confirmed for the next update , and you’ve got a recipe for a serious air meta resurgence. RC charge into Dragon Riders? That’s a strategy we haven’t seen dominate since TH17, and it’s looking very, very viable right now.

So here’s the question: are you building to counter the ground meta that’s been dominant for months, or are you getting ahead of the air meta that might be coming back?

Your Crafted Defense choice is your answer.

The Upgrade Game: How to Maximize Your Investment

Quick tip before you start dumping resources: the upgrade path matters.

The most efficient approach? First, get your defense’s hitpoints to the point where it can’t be one-shotted by a Giant Arrow. That’s usually just a couple of levels, but check the numbers—each defense is different .

From there:

  • Air Bombs: Prioritize Damage per Hit, then Attack Cooldown, then the rest of the Hitpoints.
  • Lava Launcher: Range first. Then Hitpoints. Then Damage. That 20-tile reach is what makes it a game-changer.
  • Roaster: Balance Damage per Hit and Burst Count evenly. Both are critical to its effectiveness .

And remember: these upgrades are cheap and fast compared to permanent defenses. That’s by design—they’re meant to fill gaps in your upgrade plan without breaking your resource flow .

Base Building for the New Season

Here’s where the real strategy comes in.

If you pick the Lava Launcher (and honestly, that’s my top pick, but we’ll get there), you want it centered. That 20-tile range needs to cover as much of your base as possible. Put it near your Town Hall, but not so close that it gets taken out by a Blimp that’s already targeting the core .

Pair it with a Poison Tower to slow down tanks while the burn damage does its work. Position it so it covers your Monolith, your Scattershots, and your Revenge Tower. Create a kill zone that attackers can’t avoid.

If you’re going with Air Bombs, placement is less about range and more about pathing. Put them where air troops naturally funnel—usually near your Air Defenses and Sweepers. Force attackers to fly through your anti-air gauntlet, and watch their Dragon Riders disappear .

And if you’re running the Roaster? Drop it in the core. Let it protect your Town Hall from both ground and air swarms. It won’t stop a dedicated hero dive, but it’ll make life miserable for anyone trying to spam their way through .

My Honest Take: Which One Should You Pick?

I’ve tested these in friendly challenges, watched the gameplay leaks, and talked to builders who are already tweaking their layouts for the new season . And here’s my honest opinion:

Pick the Lava Launcher.

Yeah, I know—maybe it’s nostalgia from Builder Base days. But hear me out.

The current meta—even with the Dragon level coming—leans heavily on ground attacks. Root Riders, Electro Titan Smash, Super Bowlers, and the ever-present Thrower spam that’s been dominating Ranked Mode . All of them get wrecked by a well-placed Lava Launcher.

The burn damage can’t be invis’d through, which hard-counters Warden charges and Flame Flinger plays . The range means you’re covering half your base. And with the right placement, you’re forcing attackers to either deal with it early (which burns their spells and abilities) or ignore it (which burns their troops).

It’s not invincible. It has a 6-tile dead zone where it can’t fire if troops get too close . And 4,900 HP means it can be taken down if someone commits to it. But if you protect it, if you build around it, it’s going to frustrate more attackers than anything else in your arsenal.

That said, I’m keeping a close eye on the air meta. If Dragons and Dragon Riders start showing up in every defense log, I’m switching to Air Bombs without hesitation. And if you’re in a clan that’s seeing a balanced mix of attacks, the Roaster is a perfectly respectable fallback.

But for now? Lava Launcher. Every time.

My Honest Take: Which One Should You Pick?

Final Thoughts: Adapt or Die

Here’s the thing about Clash of Clans in 2026: the game rewards adaptability.

The best players—the ones who consistently three-star in wars and climb in Legends—aren’t the ones who pick one strategy and stick with it. They’re the ones who read the meta, adjust their bases, and make it harder for everyone else to do the same .

Season 3’s Crafted Defenses are a test. Can you figure out what your clan’s enemies are bringing? Can you pick the defense that counters it? Can you build around it, upgrade it efficiently, and make it part of a base that holds up against the best attacks in the game?

If you can? You’re going to see a lot fewer red marks in your defense log.

If you can’t? Well, there’s always next season.

Stay hydrated. Practice your funnels. And for the love of all that is holy, check your defense log before you pick.
