How to Get League Medals in Clash of Clans

League Medals are the most valuable currency in Clash of Clans — and the only way to earn them is through Clan War Leagues (CWL). Every month, CWL runs for eight days, and how many medals you walk away with depends on your clan's league tier, your clan's final placement in the group, and your personal star count across all seven wars.

What Are League Medals?

League Medals are a premium in-game currency exclusive to Clash of Clans' Clan War Leagues. Unlike Gold, Elixir, or Dark Elixir, they can't be farmed from regular attacks or stolen in raids. They exist in a separate economy, spent entirely in the League Shop — which is where you'll find some of the most powerful items in the game, including Magic Hammers that can instantly complete any upgrade without spending resources.

Players can hold a maximum of 2,500 League Medals at a time. If your total would exceed that cap, excess medals convert to Gems at a rate of 1 Gem per 10 medals — a poor conversion you'll want to avoid.

 

How Clan War Leagues Work

CWL runs once per month. When the sign-up window opens (typically after Clan Games ends), your clan leader or co-leader has two days to register a roster of at least 5 players, with a maximum of 50. Your clan is then placed in a group with seven other clans from the same league tier.

Over seven consecutive days, your clan fights one war per day — one attack per player per war. Loot from CWL attacks is doubled compared to regular Clan Wars to compensate for the one-attack-per-war limit. At the end of all seven wars, clans are ranked by total stars earned. Top clans get promoted to a higher league; bottom clans get demoted.

Important: You must be added to the CWL roster before the sign-up period closes. If you join a clan after they've already registered, you won't receive any medals that season — no exceptions.

 

How League Medals Are Calculated

Medal rewards come from two separate pools: base medals and bonus medals.

Base Medals

Every player on the CWL roster receives base medals at season end. The amount depends on two things:

• Your clan's league tier and final placement — higher leagues mean a larger medal pool, and finishing 1st in your group always pays more than finishing 7th.
• Your personal star count — each star you earn across all seven wars adds roughly 10% to your individual share. Scoring 8 or more stars earns you the full reward. Scoring zero still earns you 20% (the base minimum for roster participation).

To illustrate: if your clan's full medal payout is 200 medals and you earned 4 stars, you'd receive 60% — 120 medals.

Bonus Medals

After CWL ends, your clan leader and co-leaders can distribute bonus medals to top-performing members. The bonus pool size depends on your league tier (typically ranging from 20 to 40+ medals per slot), and the number of players eligible to receive a bonus increases by one for each war your clan won during the week. A clan that wins all seven wars can therefore distribute seven bonus packages.

Leaders have 21 days after War Week ends to distribute these bonuses. If they don't, the medals are lost.

 

 

How to Maximize Your League Medals

1. Join the Right Clan

The single biggest factor in your medal earnings is your clan's league tier. Higher leagues award more base medals per position, so even a mid-table finish in Champion League pays more than winning Bronze. When looking for a clan, check:

• The clan's current CWL league tier (visible on their clan profile)
• Whether they consistently field a full roster every CWL season
• Their win rate in past league seasons
• Clan size — clans closer to 30 active members tend to have more war options and more bonus slots available

For most players, Gold or Crystal League clans are a realistic target that offers solid medal rewards without requiring a maxed Town Hall. Master and Champion League clans generally expect TH14+ with competitive attack strategies.

2. Secure a Roster Spot Every Season

Being registered on the roster is the bare minimum requirement for any medals. Stay in good standing with your clan leadership, participate in regular wars to show you're active, and communicate your availability before CWL sign-ups open. If you're consistently added to the roster, even modest participation earns you medals every single month.

3. Earn 8 Stars for the Full Reward

8 stars across 7 wars is the threshold for maximum base medals. That works out to roughly one 3-star and five 2-stars — very achievable with consistent attacks. The practical approach:

• Scout your assigned targets before Battle Day starts
• Use a reliable, practiced army composition rather than experimenting during CWL
• Practice tricky attack strategies in Friendly Challenges beforehand
• Communicate with your clan so targets are called and double-hits don't waste attacks on already-starred bases

4. Help Your Clan Win Wars

Each war your clan wins during the week adds one additional bonus medal slot, which leaders can award to a deserving member. Winning more wars means more bonus opportunities — and if you're consistently contributing stars, you're more likely to be on the receiving end of those bonuses. Strong base design (especially protecting Town Hall and Clan Castle) also contributes to war wins even on days when you're assigned as a defensive anchor.

5. Don't Let Medals Hit the Cap

The 2,500 medal cap is easy to hit if you're a regular CWL participant in a high-tier clan. Check your medal count before each new season ends and spend down if you're close to the ceiling. Converting excess medals to Gems at a 10:1 ratio is a significant loss.

The League Shop is accessed from the Home Village shop under its own tab. Items rotate and some are locked until your clan reaches certain league tiers. Here's how to prioritize:

Best value for most players:

• Hammers (Building, Fighting, Spells, Heroes) — These instantly start and complete an upgrade without spending resources. That's the key advantage over Books, which still require you to have the Gold/Elixir/Dark Elixir on hand. For high-level players, a Hammer on a key defensive building or hero upgrade can save weeks. Note: each Hammer type has a 7-day cooldown after purchase.

• Builder Potions — At around 30 medals each, Builder Potions give 9 hours of boost per builder. With 6 builders active, one potion is effectively 54 hours of upgrade progress. For lower Town Halls (TH10 and below), four Builder Potions for ~120 medals often outperforms a single Hammer of Building in total time saved.

• Research Potions — Speed up your lab while it's actively upgrading a troop or spell. Useful when stacked with Builder Potions during a heavy upgrade push.

The medal-to-gem conversion trick:

Training Potions cost 10 medals each and sell for 10 gems. That's a 1:1 conversion rate — the best in the game. If you're saving gems for a specific purpose and have medals to spare, this is a clean way to convert.

Lower priority:

• Resource packs (Gold, Elixir, Dark Elixir) — Reasonable when builders would otherwise sit idle, but generally less efficient than magic items that save upgrade time.
• Decorations and statues — Purely cosmetic. Fine if you want them, but spend your essentials first.

 

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Missing the sign-up window. CWL sign-ups are easy to miss if you're not paying attention to the events tab. A missed sign-up means zero medals that month — there's no way to join mid-season.

Staying in a low-activity clan. A clan that doesn't fill its CWL roster consistently, or one that frequently loses wars due to inactive members, will keep you in lower leagues with smaller medal payouts. It's worth finding a more competitive clan if medals matter to you.

Letting bonus medals expire. If you're a leader or co-leader, distribute bonuses before the 21-day window closes. If you're a member, remind your leadership — those medals don't carry over.

Sitting on medals near the cap. Plan your spending around CWL season timing. If you know you'll be earning 200+ medals in a few days, make sure you have room.

Do regular Clan Wars or Friendly Challenges count toward League Medals?

No. League Medals are exclusively awarded through Clan War Leagues. Regular wars, friendly challenges, and other game modes have no effect on your CWL medal count.

What happens if I leave my clan during CWL?

Your medal rewards are still calculated based on your roster participation and stars earned — you keep what you earned even if you leave or are kicked during the season. However, you won't be eligible for any bonus medals the leader distributes after the season.

Can lower Town Hall players still earn meaningful medals?

Yes. Town Hall level affects which clans will realistically recruit you, not your personal medal formula within CWL.
