The Max. 88 Base Hero Upgrade is now live in FC 27 Ultimate Team. It requires 140,000 Item Score and rewards one random, untradeable Base Hero rated 85 to 88. The reward pool features 80 Heroes, including headline pulls such as Blaise Matuidi, Ramires, Antonio Di Natale, Jaap Stam and Paulo Futre.
This guide covers the SBC requirements, cheapest completion routes, complete reward tier list, and the best attacking, midfield and defensive pulls to help you decide whether the upgrade is worth completing.
What Is the Max 88 Base Hero Upgrade SBC?
The Max. 88 Base Hero Upgrade is a Streamlined SBC, meaning you do not need to build a traditional 11-player squad or worry about chemistry. Instead, submit eligible Player Items until their combined Item Score reaches 140,000 to earn one random Base Hero.
The reward is a pack, not a player pick. You cannot choose between several Heroes, and the “Max. 88” label does not guarantee an 88-rated player.
The reward can be any eligible Hero in the pool. The prices listed below represent the approximate market value of their tradeable versions, rather than coins you can recover from the untradeable SBC reward.
How to Complete the Max 88 Hero SBC
- Open Ultimate Team and go to SBCs.
- Select Max. 88 Base Hero Upgrade.
- Add spare eligible players and watch the Item Score total.
- Use untradeable duplicates and cards you do not need for another guaranteed upgrade.
- Check the full submission before confirming.
- Reach 140,000 Item Score, submit the challenge and open the Hero pack.
Progress carries across submissions, and eligible duplicates can contribute toward the same challenge. However, submitted players are permanently removed from your club, even when you have only made partial progress. Before submitting high-rated fodder, check whether you need those players for another SBC with a guaranteed reward.
Max 88 SBC Cost and Cheapest Solutions
The Max. 88 Base Hero Upgrade costs approximately 174,915 Coins on console or 162,240 Coins on PC when completed using market purchases. Your actual spending depends on your available fodder, chosen player ratings and market prices.
Standard Gold Player Items contribute the following Item Score toward the 140,000-point requirement:
The 84-rated route offers the lowest cost among these examples, but it requires purchasing and submitting 169 players. The 25-card route costs approximately 17K more while saving 144 purchases, making it a more convenient alternative for players who value speed.
Before buying Gold fodder, check the special cards already in your club. Some special Player Items provide higher Item Score than standard Gold cards of the same rating, helping you reach the requirement with fewer submissions. Untradeable duplicates are particularly useful here, but remember that tradeable cards still have an opportunity cost: submitting a card means giving up the coins you could have earned by selling it.
If you are short of coins for the final purchases, you can compare LDShop’s FC 27 Coins offer, but use club fodder first whenever it does not block a guaranteed upgrade.
Max 88 vs Max 87 Base Hero SBC: What’s Different?
The Max 88 upgrade requires 25,000 additional Item Score, but it also introduces 18 Heroes rated 88, significantly raising the potential reward ceiling. Those 18 players make up 22.5% of the 80-player reward pool. However, this is only the proportion of eligible players, not the actual probability of packing an 88-rated Hero. Individual player drop rates are not publicly available.
The higher reward ceiling also comes with a larger fodder requirement. The approximate median market value of the 80 Heroes is 159,500 Coins, compared with an estimated 174,915-Coin completion cost on console. That makes the SBC more appealing for clubs with unused untradeable fodder and a riskier investment when you need to purchase most of the required players.
All 80 Max 88 Base Hero Rewards: S, A and B Tiers
Not every Hero is equally valuable. Some can immediately improve a competitive Ultimate Team squad, while others are better suited to starter teams, specific formations or themed lineups. Our tier list considers each player’s position, gameplay strengths, squad usefulness and approximate market value. These rankings reflect the overall quality of each reward, not its pack probability.
S Tier: The Pulls You Want
Matuidi and Ramires are the standout midfield rewards, offering outstanding defensive value despite their relatively modest overall ratings. Di Natale, Zola and Okocha lead the attacking options, while Stam, Córdoba and Kompany give the reward pool an impressive defensive ceiling. Pulling any of these Heroes would be an excellent result.
A Tier: Strong Rewards for the Right Squad
These Heroes offer solid value when they fill a genuine gap in your squad. Lizarazu and Kewell can strengthen the left side, while Fàbregas, Rui Costa, Francescoli and Marchisio are attractive options for teams that need better passing, progression or chance creation. A good Hero in the wrong position can still end up sitting on your bench.
B Tier: Situational or Lower-Value Pulls
A B-tier reward is not necessarily unusable. Some of these Heroes can still perform well in the right squad, particularly if you are building around a specific nation, league or formation. However, many cost less on the Transfer Market than the SBC itself. If you specifically want one of these players, purchasing the tradeable version is generally a more predictable option than spending coins on a random pack.
Three Best Attacking Rewards
Antonio Di Natale, Jay-Jay Okocha and Paulo Futre are three of the strongest attacking rewards in the Max 88 Hero pool. Each offers a different attacking profile, from clinical finishing to close control and direct wing play.
Three Best Midfield Rewards
Blaise Matuidi, Ramires and Wesley Sneijder cover three valuable midfield roles: defensive protection, recovery speed and attacking creativity. Whether your team needs a reliable holding midfielder or another creative presence behind the attack, these are three of the best outcomes from the Hero pack.
Three Best Defensive Rewards
The Max 88 Hero Upgrade also contains several excellent centre-backs. Jaap Stam, Iván Córdoba and Ledley King stand out for their defensive qualities and overall market value.
Is the Max 88 Hero SBC Worth It?
The Max. 88 Base Hero Upgrade is worth considering if you have plenty of spare untradeable fodder. However, completing it entirely with purchased players is a much bigger gamble.
Of the 80 eligible Heroes, 38 have an approximate market value above the 174,915-Coin completion cost, while 42 fall below it. The median Hero value is approximately 159,500 Coins, slightly lower than the estimated cost of the cheapest console solution. The best rewards are extremely valuable, but the random nature of the pack makes the result difficult to predict. These figures describe the composition of the reward pool, not actual pack probabilities.
Here’s how we recommend approaching the challenge:
- Do it if most of the 140,000 Item Score can come from untradeable cards and you would start a wide range of the pool.
- Consider it on PC if you already own a meaningful amount of fodder and would be happy with most positions.
- Skip it if you are buying everything or chasing one specific Hero. Buying the exact card is cheaper and certain whenever that player costs less than the SBC.
