Protecting your city in Evony has grown more challenging, particularly since the K45 update rolled out. K45+ Keeps are now more frequent. Buffs regularly exceed 5,000%. We're seeing 10-million-troop rallies. And the only thing we can personally do is make sure we are building the best defense possible.
This guide breaks down what players are actually using to survive rallies, what they're doing to bait attacks, and how to even come out point-positive on the exchange.
Understanding the Fundamentals: Buffs, Debuffs & Battle Mechanics

Before diving into specific defense strategies, we need to cover some essentials. In Evony, buffs and debuffs play a massive role in combat dynamics. Beyond troop numbers and types, these modifiers often determine the outcome of a fight.
What Are Buffs? A buff boosts a specific attribute of your troops—whether defending or attacking. Each troop type benefits from three key categories: Attack (increases damage dealt), Defense (reduces damage taken), and HP (improves durability).
What Are Debuffs? A debuff works similarly but weakens the enemy's buffs. If an attacker has 2000% ranged attack and you apply a 1000% ranged attack debuff, you reduce their ranged troop attack to 1000%. However, debuffs have a cap—they can only reduce an enemy's buff by up to 50%.
Flat vs. Percentage Refines: Buffs and debuffs come in two forms—percentages or flat absolute values. Percentage buffs apply to a troop's base stats, while flat buffs add a set value directly. For T1 troops (which have tiny base stats), flat refines make a massive difference. T1 Mounted base HP is 1,000; max percentage refines across 8 slots yield 3,400 HP per troop, while flat refines can reach 17,000 HP per troop. Flat refines are also immune to enemy debuffs—unlike percentage buffs which can be reduced.
Troop Layering: Combat occurs in rounds on a "virtual" battlefield, where each troop layer can engage only one enemy layer per round. Attackers usually strike with fully layered marches covering all types and tiers from T1 to T14 or T15. If you, as defender, have fewer layers, you're at a disadvantage.
Troop Type Interactions: The rock-paper-scissors dynamic remains fundamental: Mounted beats Ground, Ground beats Ranged, Ranged beats Mounted, and Siege is best against other Siege.
Choosing Your Defense Strategy

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Your approach should reflect your spending habits. Here are the three main paths:
I. Pure Ghosting (Best for F2P & Very Low Spenders)
This involves having no significant defensive layers in your keep at all. You rely entirely on ghosting your PvP marches—sending them out to avoid combat—leaving your city with zero defenses. It's the most budget-friendly option. Rather than sinking resources into a defense that won't hold up, you funnel everything into crafting strong PvP marches—starting with a solid archer march, as it's the most versatile.
II. T1 Trap Defense (Mid-Spenders / Grinders)
A T1 trap keep centers on amassing mostly Tier 1 troops with minimal higher-tier layers. The strategy relies on your T1 troops overwhelming attackers, winning through a favorable power exchange—T1s yield far fewer points when lost compared to an enemy's higher-tier losses.
To make this work effectively today, you need at least 1 billion T1 troops, 300 million T2s, and 100 million T3s, alongside well-developed subordinate city generals and debuffs.
Typical T1 Trap Troop Configuration:

PvP marches must remain ghosted to stay safe.
The T1 Mounted trap keep is a proven defense—even an 800 million power keep can repel attacks from 5–10 billion power foes if built right. However, I don't advise this for F2P or very low spenders. It demands significant time and resources.
III. Siege Defense with Meat Shield (Moderate-High Spenders)
This suits players who spend moderately (VIP 15-18) and can secure the resources and buffs needed to sustain it. The build focuses on balanced defense with substantial layers across all tiers and troop types, with siege machines as your primary defensive strength.
Before scaling up siege layers, ensure your buffs meet these minimum thresholds:
- Attack: >1500% (aim for 2200% at K40)
- HP: >1200% (aim for 2000% at K40)
- Defense: >1200% (aim for 2000% at K40)
For debuffs:
- Attack: >1200% (aim for 1500% at K40)
- HP: >200% (aim for 500% at K40)
- Defense: >200% (aim for 500% at K40)

Critical Note: Your main wall general must wear a ring or bracer with +15% siege attack range. Without it, your siege defense is severely handicapped.
Wall Generals: Your First Line of Defense
Your primary buffs for keep defense come from your main wall general, their gear and refines, plus your assistant wall general.

Top Wall Generals in 2026
Zhou Yu remains a top-tier choice, with Takenaka Shigeharu as a strong alternative. Queen Boudica is ideal for many setups—accessible and easy to max at 10 stars. New additions include Queen Tamar (released with the 2026 Mother's Day events), Akechi Mitsuhide,Francis I of France, and Visconti with Niccolo Piccinino.
Assistant Generals like Niccolo Piccinino, Henry IV, and Hersilia are valuable additions to the defense meta.
Subordinate City Generals
For debuffs, your subordinate city generals and their gear are by far the dominant source. A common mistake is equipping subordinate city generals for buffs—but buffs on these generals only boost troops in that specific subordinate city, not your main keep's forces. Instead, focus exclusively on gear that provides debuffs.
Prioritize generals like Baldwin, Hojo, Mark Antony, and Andy Jackson for Ranged/Siege debuffs. Cimon is also valuable. Max out the second specialty category for each subordinate general, unlocking an additional -10% debuff per general.
Gear, Refines & Equipment

Wall General Gear Refines
For T1 Trap Defense (Flat Refines):
- Helmet & Leg Armor:4 gold flat Mounted HP boosts each
- Weapon & Ring:4 gold flat Mounted Attack boosts each
- Chest Armor & Boots:4 gold flat Mounted Defense boosts each
- Dragon (Thebes):4 gold flat Mounted HP boosts
For Siege Defense (Percentage Refines):
- Weapon:Siege Attack percentage
- Chest Armor:Siege Defense percentage
- Boots:Siege Defense percentage
- Helmet:Mounted HP flats OR Siege HP percentage
- Leg Armor:Mounted HP flats OR Siege HP percentage
- Ring/Bracer:Siege Attack percentage
Avoid Koryo gear—opt for Conquest Civ gear like Augustus Leg Armor(top pick) andBourbon Bracers.
Subordinate City General Gear
Craft Achaemenidae gear for every subordinate general, aiming for a full six-piece set per general (each set adds a -15% debuff). Focus solely on gear with debuffs—ignore buffs entirely. Don't refine subordinate city gear.
For siege defense, you'll eventually need to mix in civilization gear pieces in this priority order:
- Han Dynasty Leg Armor
- Abbas Bracers
- Aztec Round Shield
- Sasanian Bracers
- Augustus Leg Armor
- Heian Helmet
- Sasanian Helmet
- Sasanian Leg Armor
Spiritual Beasts: The Hidden Edge
Spiritual beasts are crucial for defense. The K45 update enabled the Spiritual Beast Seal and Innate Skill functions.
Key Spiritual Beasts for Defense:
- Tarasque offers siege machine debuffs and enemy ranged troop HP debuffs
- Jormungandr provides top-tier ranged buffs for defense
- Chiron at max level offers Mounted troop attack +104% and Ground troop defense +104%
- Duneyrr provides cavalry attack and defense buffs, sub-city buffs, and enemy cavalry/infantry HP debuffs
- Rainbow Crow and Tarasque are newer additions with siege machine debuffs
Save your spiritual beast scales for these key additions.
Additional Sources of Buffs & Debuffs
Your buffs come from many sources beyond wall generals:
Primary Buff Sources:
- Main wall general + gear + refines + dragon
- Assistant wall general
- Academy & Military Academy research
- Duty officers
- Civilization & Art treasures
- Monarch gear
- Keep champions
- Blazons
- Spiritual Beast Seals
- Ideal Land
- Council of State
- Rally Spot
Debuff Sources:
- Subordinate city generals + gear (dominant)
- Academy research
- Keep champions
- Civilization treasures
- Art treasures
- Blazons
- Senate
- Ideal Land
- Covenants
- Council of State
- Duty generals
- Rally Spot
Russian subordinate cities are particularly valuable for attack debuffs.
The 2026 Layering Meta: How Many Troops Do You Really Need?
The biggest debate in Evony PvP right now is: what is the correct troop layering setup for defense? Should you still be running 10K layers? Is 200K the new standard? Do you actually need 500K or even 1 million layers to survive rallies from K44–K45 players?
For a K39, 3.5B power account currently testing the newer defensive meta, they're running around 200,000 troops per tier from T1 through T14 across all four troop types, with siege layers lower in some tiers (45K–50K in upper siege tiers).
The reality: Many high-level players are now running1 million troops on every single layer across ground, mounted, and ranged. However, for mid-game accounts (K35–K39), 250K–500K per layer may still be sufficient against solo attacks—but you'll struggle against rallies from K44–K45 players.
Critical Tip: Always keep a healing preset ready in SvS and battlefield scenarios. Add 1,000 troops of every type and tier, save it, and heal it after each attack. This keeps your layers full and boosts your defense significantly.
Closing Thoughts
As a solid K39/K40, you should handle K41/K42 solos without crippling losses. Against strong K43+ foes, though, the buff/debuff gap becomes too wide—don't expect to hold firm.
My recommendations for different players:
- F2P / Very Low Spenders: Pure ghosting with no defense is currently the only realistic option. Focus on building strong PvP marches starting with ranged.
- Low-Mid Spenders (Already Invested in T1 Trap): Push to 1 billion T1 Mounted, 300M T2, and 100M T3. Prioritize flat refines and debuffs above all else. The better your buffs/debuffs, the more punishment your T1s can take.
- Mid-High Spenders (VIP 15-18): Siege defense with meat shield is your path. Balance refines between your meat shield and siege machines. Ensure you hit the minimum buff/debuff thresholds before scaling troop counts.
- Everyone: Never stop chasing buffs and debuffs. Tap every available source—blazons, spiritual beasts, civilization treasures, council of state, ideal land. The gap between you and the top players is measured in percentages, and every percentage matters.
Remember: there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The "right" build for you might not suit someone else. Use battle reports to analyze your performance and adjust accordingly.
