Fate War Best F2P Heroes: Who to Level First in Patch 1.1.11

Selena and Rex are the two heroes that carry a free-to-play Fate War account through its first month. Selena is the easiest strong carry to build without gear, and Rex is a frontline unit that survives on campaign and daily rewards alone. Reynald is the safe backup pick if neither of those drops for you, and Linda is worth adding as a second investment once your main carry is stable. Skip Elena, Elia, and Sigrid early — they cost more than they return at this stage of the game.

What Actually Matters for a Fate War F2P Start

Fate War mixes strategic RPG combat, base building, seasonal progression, and roguelike expedition runs, and the early game rewards focused investment far more than spreading resources across your roster. A hero worth building at this stage needs to check three boxes: it has to work outside of one narrow mode, it has to be reachable without heavy spending, and it has to still be relevant once you're a few weeks in rather than falling off after the tutorial.

The team shape that gets you through the opening chapters is simple — one carry for damage, one tank to hold the front line, and one support to keep the pack alive and hitting harder. Trying to level four or five heroes evenly is the single most common way new players stall out. Pick one carry, get it functional, and only then start filling in the rest of the team.

Hero

Role

Priority

Why Build Them

Selena

Selena

Carry (Cavalry)

High

Fast Rage generation, strong PvE clear speed, still useful in the midgame

Rex

Tank (Berserker)

High

Cheap to build, holds the front line, doesn't need rare gear to function

Reynald

Reynald

Flex/Universal

Medium

Easy to obtain, safe to level while waiting on a better main

Linda

Linda

Sub-DPS/Support

Medium

Debuffs that boost squad damage, good return on limited resources

Selena

Selena

Selena is about as forgiving as a starting carry gets. Her passive, Valkyrie's Rage, builds up quickly, which means her ultimate comes online far more often than most early heroes. That translates directly into faster wave clears and steadier boss damage, which matters a lot when your account is still running on starter gear.

The bigger advantage for F2P players is that Selena doesn't need a legendary loadout to pull her weight. Her kit does most of the work on its own, so you're not stuck waiting weeks for the "right" equipment before she becomes usable. She also holds up reasonably well into the midgame, especially once you pair her with Erin for stronger single-target damage against bosses.

A reasonable pace is getting her to level 30 within the first five days, then shifting your focus to her talents. It's worth holding off on talent resets until around day 14, once you have a clearer sense of your build direction.

Rex

Rex

Rex is the cheap-but-necessary frontliner that makes the early game noticeably less stressful. High HP, straightforward defensive mechanics, and solid survivability without needing rare materials make him close to an ideal early tank for anyone not spending money.

He builds up from resources you'll already be collecting through campaign stages and daily activities, and he holds the line well enough that fights stop feeling like a coin flip. He pairs particularly well with Karl, and together they form a front that can absorb damage even when your overall combat power still looks modest on paper.

His ceiling drops off later in the game, so it's not worth pouring resources into him indefinitely. For the first month, though, he's one of the more dependable heroes you can build. Getting him to around level 25 in the first week, using mostly campaign and daily materials, is a fair target — after level 30, it's better to redirect resources elsewhere.

Reynald

Reynald

If your early pulls didn't give you Selena or Rex, Reynald is a solid fallback. He isn't a top-meta pick, but he's a low-risk one — easy to obtain through starter rewards, versatile enough to get you through early content, and safe to invest in without feeling like you're wasting resources on a dead-end build.

His real value is as insurance rather than a long-term plan. You can level him without worrying about "ruining" your account, and his talents can be reset later once a stronger hero drops. Level 20 is generally enough before you shift focus elsewhere.

Linda

Linda

Linda tends to get overlooked, but she's a strong value pick for F2P accounts. As a sub-DPS, she leans on debuffs that boost your whole squad's damage output rather than relying purely on her own numbers — which matters when your main carry doesn't have ideal gear yet.

She's also inexpensive to build relative to what she gives back, which is exactly the kind of hero worth prioritizing when resources are tight. She works especially well alongside Kalthas, with one applying debuffs and the other converting that weakness into faster kills.

Best Early Team Combos

Raw hero strength only gets you halfway in Fate War. How your heroes work together often matters more than any single unit's individual power, especially in the first few weeks.

Selena

Erin

Selena

Erin

This pairing is one of the smoothest early PvE setups available. Selena keeps her Rage cycle moving while Erin cleans up priority targets and bosses, giving you a fast, mobile team that's well suited to campaign stages and PvE raids.

Rex

Karl

Rex

Karl

When enemy damage starts hurting and survival becomes the priority, this combo is built for exactly that. It's not about speed — it's about getting through fights without a wipe, which makes it a practical choice for tougher stages where your power level isn't quite there yet.

Kalthas

Linda

Kalthas

Linda

For a slower, attrition-based playstyle, Kalthas lays down debuffs while Linda converts them into extra squad damage, making it easier to finish off weakened enemies. This pairs well with either Selena, if you want more raw damage, or Reynald, if you're playing it safe.

Vista and Resource Farming

Vista deserves a brief mention outside the main carry conversation. She's not worth heavy investment, but she's genuinely useful for speeding up resource farming and general account economy. Leveling her to around 15 is usually enough — going further than that early on isn't a great use of resources.

Heroes to Avoid Early

Some heroes look tempting simply because they drop early or read well on paper, but building them tends to cost more than it returns at this stage. Generally, it's worth steering clear of heroes that scale poorly into the late game, only function in a narrow niche, demand rare materials too soon, or don't pull their weight in PvE progression.

Elena and Elia underperform in both PvE and PvP for an early account and lose relevance quickly, which makes early investment in either one a questionable use of resources.

Baldur and Skerne are sometimes leveled for farming purposes, but Vista already covers that role more efficiently. There's little reason to build either one before day 30, once your core team is already established.

Sigrid doesn't hold up as a tank compared to Rex or Karl — her survivability falls short in real fights, and there's rarely a good reason to pick her over the alternatives above.

The common thread is that these heroes either scale poorly or cost too much to build for what they give back, and rare materials in Fate War are exactly the kind of resource you don't want to waste in the first month.

14-Day F2P Leveling Route

Days 1–3: pick one carry. Choose Selena or Reynald and take that hero to level 20 while clearing the campaign and collecting every free reward available. Don't get pulled into leveling side heroes just because they dropped.

Days 4–7: add a tank. Bring Rex or Karl up to around level 15. That's typically enough to make your two-hero core noticeably more stable in fights. Resist the urge to also start a support and a second damage dealer at the same time — one carry and one tank is enough for now.

Days 8–10: talents and synergy. With your core two heroes in place, start investing in your carry's talents — this tends to add more damage than spreading levels across secondary heroes. This is also a good window to bring in Linda for extra squad damage or Vista if resource farming has become a bottleneck.

Days 11–14: expeditions and the auction. Push expedition farming and keep an eye on the Tribe Bounty Auction for good value. Try not to let resources sit unused once they can go toward a meaningful upgrade — stockpiling early almost always means losing pace.

Quick priority checklist:

  • One main carry leveled to a working point
  • One tank for stability
  • Talents invested without overcapping
  • Expeditions and auction used consistently
  • Minimal spending on niche, off-meta heroes

FAQ

Is it worth rerolling at the start?

If your first 20 or so pulls don't land Selena or Erin, a reroll is generally worth the time. It usually takes 10–15 minutes and can save you weeks of slower progress down the line.

Should F2P players build a healer?

Iris is useful once content gets tougher, but she isn't essential on day one. It's usually better to wait until after day 14 and add her if survivability becomes a real problem.

When should I switch my main carry?

Only if you pull a genuinely strong S+ hero, such as Amaterasu or Helda. Swapping Selena out for a mid-tier alternative usually means losing invested resources without a real upgrade in return.

Where should gems go first?

Speed-Ups and starter resource packs give the most consistent value, followed by targeted pulls if you're chasing a specific hero. Spending gems on random pulls without a target is usually the least efficient option early on.

Is Fate War playable without spending anything?

Yes. The heroes and route above are built around a pure F2P account, and the early game is designed to be cleared without paid resources — spending just makes certain early bottlenecks smoother, not necessary.
