Honkai Star Rail DoT Team Guide - Everything You Need To Know

The DoT teams in Honkai Star Rail prefer teams that deal damage to enemies utilizing the different types of DoT or Damage over Time effects in Honkai Star Rail - Bleed, Shock, Windsheer and Burn. These effects can stack together to deal damage to enemies when they take action or when they are triggered by allies’ skill effects, dealing elemental damage to enemies proportional to the amount of stacks and duration of the DoT on enemies.

How DoT Damage Works

DoT damage consists of 4 different effects based on the 4 different elements: Windshear for Wind, Bleed for Physical, Shock for Lightning and Burn for Fire. These DoT damage can not deal critical damage and their damage varies depending on certain effects:

dot team's effects

- DoT landing chances will be affected by the character’s Effect Hit Rate, the higher the Effect Hit Rate, the more likely it is for DoT to land on enemies. All DoTs have a base chance of 150% to land on enemies.

- DoT damage is calculated based on the stats of the character that apply them on the enemies, with their damage being increased proportional to the character’s Attack stat.

- DoT damage is affected by Elemental Damage%, meaning players can run Elemental Damage% Orbs on characters that inflict DoTs on enemies to maximize the damage output of the DoTs.

Normal DoTs VS Break DoTs

It is important to note that there are generally 2 types of DoTs that can be inflicted on the enemies: Normal DoT and Break DoTs.

- Normal DoTs are DoT effects that are applied on the enemies when characters use their skill kit and their damage scales only to the character’s attack stat depending on their skill description and modifiers.

- Break DoTs are DoT effects that are applied on the enemies as a result of a weakness break effect from the 4 elements of Physical, Lightning, Fire and Wind. When this type of DoT triggers and inflicts a DoT stack on the enemy, its damage does not scale based on the characters’ attack stat and skill damage modifier but rather the character’s break effect. The higher the characters’ break effect, the more damage this instance of Break DoT damage will deal.

Generally speaking, in a DoT team, players will aim to inflict as many Normal DoTs as possible with high Attack characters to deal damage to enemies rather than relying on Break DoTs that require Break Effect. Therefore, players should invest more on the Attack stats of DoT characters rather than Break Effect stat.

Abilities That Triggers DoT Debuffs

Alongside the normal way of letting the DoT trigger when the enemy takes their turn, certain characters in the game have the ability to instantly trigger the effect of DoTs debuffs inflicted on the enemies. The characters that have this ability are:

- Kafka: Kafka can instantly trigger all DoTs on the enemy with her Elemental Skill.

- Luka: Luka can trigger all Bleed DoT on the enemy with his Normal Attacks when he has 2 stacks of Talent.

- Guinefen: Guinefen can trigger all Burn DoT on the enemy with her Ultimate.

- Sampo: Sampo can trigger all Wind Shear DoT on the enemy with his E4 effect when the enemies have 5 or more Wind Shear Stacks on them.

- Hysilens: Hysilens can trigger all DoTs on the enemy when she uses her Ultimate thanks to her Talent.

dot team's damage

It is important to note that these instant DoT trigger effects are considered an additional attack that deals damage to enemies, with the damage dealing additional damage based on the effect’s damage modifiers and do not reduce DoT stacks on the enemies. These damage instances also do not inflict any weakness reduction effects on the enemies. This means that these Instant DoT Trigger effects deal more damage to enemies than when the DoTs trigger themselves on the enemies’ turn, making having them in DoTs centric teams a must.

Honkai Star Rail DoT Team Guide - How To Form The Best DoT Teams

Now that we have gone over the general information that players need to know regarding DoTs debuffs, here are considerations in terms of Relics, Ornament and stat builds that players should know when building up a DoT team.

Best DoT Relics and Ornament Sets

Like with other types of teams, the DoT centric team have their own Relic and Ornament sets that help boost the overall damage output of the character’s DoTs. Generally speaking, Relics and Ornament pieces that can boost the Attack Stat of the characters are considered good for DoT centric teams, with the Prisoner in Deep Confinement Relic Set and Revelry by the Sea Ornament Set being the best DoT boosting Relics.

Prisoner in Deep Confinement

Prisoner in Deep Confinement

2pcs

Increases ATK by 12%.

4pcs

For every DoT the enemy target is afflicted with, the wearer will ignore 6% of its DEF when dealing DMG to it. This effect is valid for a max of 3 DoTs.

Revelry by the Sea

Revelry by the Sea

2pcs

Increases the wearer's ATK by 12%. When the wearer's ATK is higher than or equal to 2400/3600, increases the DoT DMG dealt by 12%/24% respectively.

Important Stats To Consider

There are 3 top important stats that players need to consider when building a DoT Centric Team: Attack, Speed and Effect Hit Rate.

- Characters need to have as high Attack stats as possible in order to maximize the amount of DoT damage they deal, as all DoTs effects scale proportionally to the characters’ Attack stat.

- DoT teams want to inflict as many DoT debuff stacks on the enemies as possible before they take their action, therefore, speed is also an important stat for DoT centric teams that allow characters to take as many actions as possible in 1 turn.

- With Kafka’s special Talent that doubles the attack of any allies in the team with 75% or higher Effect Hit Rate and with many DoT characters talent boosting their damage proportional to their Effect Hit Rate, investing in this stat to the desired threshold to maximize character’s Talent is highly recommended.

Additionally, to maximize the damage of DoTs from characters, it is generally recommended to have Elemental Damage% Orbs rather than Attack% Orbs, as Elemental Damage% Orbs will generally boost the DoT damage more than Attack% Orbs.

Honkai Star Rail DoT Team Guide - Best DoT Teams

Generally, the DoT teams in Honkai Star Rail are formed around a single character - Kafka, with Kafka’s teammates rotating depending on the other DoT options that players have access to. If players do not have Kafka, it is very difficult to run a proper DoT Team, as Kafka serves as both the Main DPS that can trigger enemies’ DoT and a support character that massively boost the attack of all characters on the field when she is in the party.

The best premium DoT team is:

Kafka

Hysilens

Black Swan

Huohuo

Kafka

Hysilens

Black Swan

Huohuo

Main DPS

Sub DPS/ Support

Sub DPS/ Support

Sustain/ Support

Kafka serves as the team’s main DPS and support character, with her ability to constantly trigger the enemies’ DoTs with her Skill and Ultimate, dealing high amounts of damage instances on enemies constantly.

Hysilens is the team’s DoT enabler and sub DPS with her ability to inflict all 4 DoTs on enemies with her Skill and Ultimate, maintaining the debuff stacks on enemies and help with the team’s damage by Triggering the enemies’ DoTs with her Ultimate.

Black Swan is the team’s DoT enabler with her strong Arcana special DoTs that functions like Wind Shear but with additional AoE effect, allowing her to inflict enemies with massive amount of DoT stacks before allowing Hysilens and Kafka to detonate all of them.

Huohuo is the main sustain option for the team with her constant healing, ability to cleanse debuff and crucially, her ability to boost the entire team’s Attack with her ultimate, further boosting the team’s DoT damage output.

Generally speaking, Hysilens and Black Swan can be replaced with other more F2P 4* options like Luka, Sampo and Guinefen. But these substitutes will massively reduce the general damage output of the team and will require heavy investment for the team to work properly.

Conclusion

Often considered one of the most premium teams in the game and requires heavy investment, DoT teams in Honkai Star Rail are becoming stronger and stronger with the special buff of Kafka and the release of the DoT enabler Hysilens. Perhaps in the future with more characters catered to DoT are released, there will be more variations to the team for players to enjoy.

That being said, for now this guide has outlined all of the important things players need to pay attention to in order to make the best DoT team to clear all of the important end game contents in Honkai Star Rail.
