Gaming's scam problem has already claimed hundreds of thousands of victims this year, from a Steam malware case the FBI is still investigating to a Minecraft hack that keeps adding new victims daily. Now it has found its biggest target yet. A wave of scam websites is charging fans $250 in crypto to unlock GTA VI before its November 19, 2026, release.
Anyone who pays gets nothing in return, and since crypto payments cannot be reversed, there is no way to get that money back afterward. Every site in this wave runs the same playbook: a countdown timer, familiar artwork, and a payment window built to close before anyone checks twice.
GTA Scams Started Long Before GTA VI
Kaspersky's 2025 research already ranked Grand Theft Auto as the single most impersonated game name in cybercrime, ahead of Minecraft and Call of Duty, before GTA VI had a release date. GTA VI has not introduced a new scam tactic; it has simply given an existing one a much larger audience to reach at once.

- 39% of US gamers say they have been targeted by a gaming scam at least once
- 33.7% of people using third-party gaming marketplaces got scammed, losing $409 on average
- Players under 18 were hit hardest, at a 41.6% scam rate
Where These Scams Actually Reach Players
Most of this activity does not sit on a suspicious website waiting to be found. It arrives through channels players already use every day. A Discord message offers a beta invite. A cheat tool installs correctly and runs in the background afterward. A cracked mod file plays the game as advertised while doing something else at the same time. None of these are rare exceptions, and a recent dataset shows how often they actually work.

- 17.65% came specifically from cracked software downloads
- A GTA V cheat service was breached in June 2026, exposing data on nearly 64,000 users
- Minecraft's WeedHack malware has infected more than 116,000 players since January, adding 2,000 to 3,000 new victims daily
Stolen accounts and stolen data are only half of what these attacks are after. The other half is money, and scammers want it in a form that can't be traced once it changes hands, which is exactly why the fake GTA VI sites only take crypto. Valve made a similar call in June 2026, when it confirmed it would stop restocking physical Steam gift cards at retail once the current stock runs out, saying scammers kept adapting around every safeguard it introduced.
Why These Scams Keep Working
Alex Zhou, Lead Gaming Industry Analyst at LDShop, says most of these scams rely on speed rather than sophistication. "People check less carefully when they think an offer might disappear in a few hours," Zhou says. "A countdown timer does more work than any fake logo. It just removes the time someone would normally spend double-checking."
That is also why a 13-year wait for a single game matters here. The longer the anticipation, the more a fake deadline can override the instinct to slow down and verify.
What To Check Before You Pay For Anything
Do not send crypto or gift card codes to unlock early access to a game. Do not open download links from accounts that messaged first. Buy GTA VI directly from Rockstar or an authorized retailer on release day. For everything else, in-game currency, codes, top-ups, use a platform built for that purpose instead of a link found in a feed or a DM.
GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, so remember that nothing legitimate will be available before that date. If someone is charging for it now, it is a scam.
