Karenina: Effulgence is a Physical-attribute Dark-element character with a [Physical Effect] mechanic. In terms of appearance, she takes on the look of a stylish captain, wielding a massive ship anchor as her weapon. Her combat style is highly versatile, allowing her to switch between anchor mode and surfboard mode on the fly. As an S-rank character in the new version, she will be featured with a rate-up in the limited banner.
Core Mechanics: Dual-Form Damage Rotation
Karenina: Effulgence's combat core revolves around switching between two forms: Anchor Trace (default) and Ride the Rapids (surfboard mode). Her entire damage rotation is built around building Tide Mark, swapping forms, and unleashing powerful attacks.
- Anchor Trace (Default): Her starting form on entry. The main objective here is to build Tide Mark by pinging Red Orbs and using charged attacks.
- Ride the Rapids (Surfboard Form): Entered by holding the dodge button once Tide Mark is full (100 points). This is her primary damage-dealing form. In this state, only Blue Orbs are available. The core mechanic is converting Tide Mark into Tidal Force (max 500) via Basic Attacks or Blue Orb pings, then unleashing her enhanced core nuke, Surge Breach.
So her basic rotation is: Build Tide Mark in Anchor Trace → Hold Dodge to enter Ride the Rapids → Convert Tide Mark to Tidal Force → Use Surge Breach to deal massive damage and build Signature Energy → Finish with Signature Move (Boundless Deluge).
Anchor Trace: Energy Building
In her default form, Karenina cannot use Blue Orbs and relies on Red Orbs and charged attacks to build Tide Mark.
- Tide Rise (Not in Tide Rise): Leaps and throws the anchor. A 3-ping deals 2200% Physical DMG and grants 50 Tide Mark.
- Island Hymn (During Tide Rise): Hooks the anchor and reels it back, pulling enemies. A 3-ping deals 1900% Physical DMG and grants 50 Tide Mark.
- Hold Basic Attack (Maelstrom / Roaring Tempest): During Anchor Trace, hold Basic Attack to charge.
Ride the Rapids: Burst Damage Phase
Upon entering Ride the Rapids, Karenina switches to her surfboard. The core mechanic here is converting Tide Mark into Tidal Force, which is then used to empower her core nuke.
- Building Tidal Force: There are three main ways, from most to least efficient:
- Basic Attacks (Windrise Dawn): Tapping Basic Attack performs a 5-hit rapid sequence. With enough Tide Mark, each hit converts a set amount (10/15/20/25/30) into Tidal Force (50/75/100/125/150) and grants Signature Energy. The final hit is the most efficient. Reaching the 500 Tidal Force cap is required for her highest-damage "Full Charge" Surge Breach.
- Pinging Blue Orbs (Death Hunt): Pinging Blue Orbs converts Tide Mark into Tidal Force. A 3-ping converts 100 Tide Mark into 300 Tidal Force, making it the most common "Fast Burst" technique for a quick rotation and swap.
Hold Basic Attack: Holding the attack button in Ride the Rapids converts Tide Mark to Tidal Force at a slow 1:1 ratio. This is the least efficient and is mainly used for minor adjustments.
- Releasing Core Damage (Surge Breach): When you have at least 100 Tidal Force, hold Basic Attack to unleash Surge Breach. This is her primary nuke.
Crucially, for every 50 Tidal Force consumed, its base damage is increased by 7% (up to a maximum of 70% bonus when consuming the full 500 Tidal Force).
It also restores a massive amount of Signature Energy (52 base, with extra on the first cast after her Signature Move).
- Releasing Signature Move (Boundless Deluge): After using Surge Breach, you will typically have enough energy for her Signature Move. This ultimate deals massive damage, and if Cinder Blight (gained from Surge Breach) is active, it is consumed for a huge damage bonus. It also leaves a 12-second field that provides resistance reduction (debuff) to enemies.
Key Rank Upgrades
Karenina: Effulgence's strength is heavily tied to her rank. Several key breakpoints provide massive improvements.
- SS Rank: A major power spike.
Unlocks the ability to automatically trigger available QTEs upon entering Ride the Rapids, casting Surge Breach, or Boundless Deluge, smoothing the rotation.
- SS3 Rank (Part of SSS-Rank): Considered her "complete" form. This is her most important rank, greatly improving her rotation and energy economy. On each switch-in, she gains 50 Tide Mark and the first Surge Breach gains an extra 12 Signature Energy.
More importantly, after the first Boundless Deluge cast on each switch-in, she gains 100 Tide Mark, and entering Ride the Rapids within 5 seconds automatically consumes 3 Orbs to grant 36 Signature Energy. This almost entirely removes the need for weapon resonance to achieve a smooth, fast rotation.
- SSS Rank: The "cherry on top."
Grants a brief Time Lag Calculation (slow-motion) effect on her Surge Breach after a specific combo, further enhancing her damage and feel.
Karenina Effulgence Weapon

Star of Niflheim
ATK increases by 10%, and the Piercing Strike effect applied by Karenina: Effulgence is increased by 20%. After entering the battlefield, the first Surge Breach that consumes 300 or more Tidal Force grants 6 Signal Orbs. The effect of consuming Tidal Force to boost Surge Breach's Base DMG is doubled.
Karenina: Effulgence's signature weapon is simple yet brutally effective—it ramps up her damage and smoothes out her rotation by letting her fire off more ultimates. If you can afford it, grabbing one copy is highly recommended.

Conclusion
Karenina: Effulgence is a new powerhouse in Punishing: Gray Raven. As the Physical team's latest Breaker, she brings solid damage, strong DEF/resistance shred, and extra Hypermatrix time for the whole squad—a must-have for Physical teams. On Darkflow teams, she offers both resistance down and easy stack generation on swap-in, smoothing out rotations. SS rank gives her a complete kit, but SS3 is the real sweet spot—it streamlines her flow by cutting out orb management, letting her dump all her damage inside the buff window. Whether you're a meta chaser, a newbie building your first Physical team, or a veteran buffing your Darkflow comp, Karenina is a fantastic pickup.
