Hail, Timekeeper. What the crystal sees, gazes upon, and seeks is countless and infinite. And you, do you really want to see the destined future, even if it can’t be changed? ...If you are prepared, scroll down and glimpse what awaits.

At the end of October 2025, the CN server for Reverse: 1999 updated to Version 3.2, welcoming a new limited character - Beryl (Mama Duck!). She is a 6-star Intellect-type limited character who introduces the brand-new Afterglow system. For Global players, she is expected to arrive after two more patches, with an estimated release date around January 22, 2026.

In this guide, we will conduct a deep dive into Beryl's mechanics, recommend Psychubes, analyze her Portrays, discuss team compositions, and provide a final verdict with pull recommendations.

New Mechanic: Afterglow

Afterglow (unofficial translation) is a new resource that can be stacked up to a maximum of 750. Its primary functions are:

  • Crit Rate Buff: For every 10 points of Afterglow, the character gains a +0.5% Crit Rate buff for one round. After the buff is applied, the current Afterglow total is halved.
  • Triggering Follow-ups: Beryl's main source of damage is tied to accumulating Afterglow.

Afterglow is generated by applying the [Halo] (unofficial translation) or [Burn] debuffs to enemies. The core gameplay loop involves consistently applying these debuffs to build Afterglow.

Kit Analysis

Core mechanic: Inevitable Doom

Beryl's damage comes almost exclusively from her follow-up attack (extra action), "Inevitable Doom."(unofficial translation)

  • Inevitable Doom (Follow-up Attack):
    • Automatically triggers upon accumulating 150 Afterglow.(It won't cost the Afterglow)
    • Deals 500% AoE Mental DMG to all enemies.
    • Deals an additional 500% Mental DMG to the enemy with the highest [Halo] or [Burn] stacks.
    • On average, applying about 30 stacks of [Halo]/[Burn] across all targets is enough to trigger this attack once.

The Crystal System

Beryl’s follow-up attack is further enhanced by her unique Crystal mechanic. Depending on her Portray level, she can equip a certain number of Crystals that augment "Inevitable Doom."

  • Blue Crystal: Provides a 33% chance per crystal to trigger an additional follow-up attack, "Inevitable Doom · Azure Overflow" (unofficial translation), after normal "Inevitable Doom" activates.
    • "Inevitable Doom · Azure Overflow" deals (100% + 120% * number of Blue Crystals) Mental DMG, with an additional hit of the same damage to the enemy with the highest [Halo]/[Burn] stacks. (At Portray 3, this is upgraded to 125% + 150% * number of crystals).
    • This means with 2 Blue Crystals, you have a 66% chance for a devastating second follow-up. With 3 Blue Crystals, this chance becomes 99%, and the damage of "Azure Overflow" surpasses the original "Inevitable Doom."

  • Purple Crystal: Enhances the damage of "Inevitable Doom" (but not "Azure Overflow") and allows it to apply additional [Halo]/[Burn] stacks.
    • For each point of Afterglow you have when "Inevitable Doom" triggers, its damage is increased by an additional 0.4% Mental DMG (0.5% at Portray 3).
    • In sustained fights, it's common to maintain 300+ Afterglow, meaning each Purple Crystal can provide a significant damage boost.

  • Green Crystal: Increases the damage of "Inevitable Doom" based on the tier of Incantations used. This is generally considered a weaker option and is not so recommended when you use Mama Duck as a main DPS.

Crystal Priority: The standard build focuses on maximizing the number of Blue Crystals for the highest chance of triggering "Azure Overflow," with one Purple Crystal for a solid damage boost.

  • P0 (2 Slots): 2 Blue or 2 Purple yield similar damage.
  • P2 (3 Slots): 2 Blue / 1 Purple is recommended. (You can only equip a maximum of two of the same Crystal type until P5).
  • P5 (4 Slots): 3 Blue / 1 Purple is the optimal configuration for a near-guaranteed, high-damage second follow-up.

Skills & Ultimate

  • Skill 1: A simple debuff skill that applies [Halo].

  • Skill 2: Applies several stacks of [Foresight]. [Foresight] (unofficial translation) reduces the Afterglow required to trigger "Inevitable Doom" by 50 (each follow-up costs one stack of Foresight). With [Foresight], you only need 100 Afterglow (At Portray1 only 75 Afterglow required) for a follow-up, significantly increasing your damage frequency.

  • Ultimate: Deals 600% Mental DMG. While the damage itself is negligible compared to her follow-ups (as it doesn't benefit from Flutterpage and her Crystals), its utility is immense. It re-applies [Halo] stacks to all enemies, sorted by their current HP. This "refreshes" the debuffs and is an excellent way to generate a massive amount of Afterglow instantly.

How to play Beryl (Playstyle Summary)

The gameplay loop is straightforward:

  1. Use Skill 2 to maintain the [Foresight] buff for more frequent follow-ups.
  2. Use Skill 1 and your teammates' skills to constantly apply [Halo] and [Burn].
  3. Use her Ultimate when you need a large burst of Afterglow.
  4. Let "Inevitable Doom" trigger automatically to deal immense damage.

Psychube Recommendations

Beryl's stat requirements are fairly generous, allowing several Psychubes to perform well. While her signature is the best, the alternatives are very competitive. Note that her signature Psychube is highly specialized and has low utility on other characters, so if you're short on resources, using an existing one is a great option.

  • The Thousandfold Fate (Signature): Her BiS (Best-in-Slot).

  • Long Night Talk: An excellent alternative, performing at roughly 95% of the Signature's effectiveness.

  • Knock on the Door: A solid choice, performing at about 85% of the Signature.

  • On the Hand of Time: A viable stat stick, also performing at around 85% effectiveness. (Yes, our overworked girl with her overworked Psychube again).

Team Composition

The Afterglow team is currently very specific, with core members who are difficult to replace.

Beryl(Main DPS)

Isolde(Sub DPS/ Support)

Flutterpage(Support)

Fatutu(Sustain/Support)

Kiperina for high pressure

  • Isolde (Mandatory): Isolde is the other cornerstone of this team. Once she enters her "Finale" state, she provides a massive damage amplification of over 100%. She applies [Burn], triggers her own frequent follow-ups to generate Afterglow, and also helps retain Afterglow between rounds. Her personal damage is also significant, contributing 15-25% of Beryl's total.

  • Flutterpage (Dedicated Support): Yes, this overworked child again. As a character who deals damage exclusively through extra actions, Beryl benefits immensely from Flutterpage. As most players know, Flutterpage provides the highest damage buffs in the game for extra actions. It's expected that even future Afterglow-focused supports may not be able to match her raw amplification, similar to Sentinel's relationship with Flutterpage in Bloodtithe teams.

  • Fatutu (Sustain & Support): The other overworked child. Fatutu is another support who benefits from extra actions and provides excellent survivability for the team. If facing extreme damage, Kiperina is a strong alternative.

At present, only Beryl and Isolde are officially designated Afterglow units. Even Brume, another upcoming character, is not listed as part of the Afterglow system in event loot menu, suggesting this core team may remain stable for some time.

The Deciding Factor: Beryl Portrays

Beryl's Portray system is unique and has a drastic impact on her performance, even more so than characters like Liang Yue. Her power is directly tied to the number of Crystals she can equip, which is locked behind Portrays.

  • P0: 2 Crystal Slots
  • P2: 3 Crystal Slots
  • P5: 4 Crystal Slots

This progression isn't just a simple damage increase. Each Blue Crystal adds both a significant damage modifier and a 33% chance for an entirely new attack. The improvement is multiplicative. This is akin to a hypothetical P5 Ezio being able to equip all his weapons at once, or a P5 Cassandra unlocking all her Talents—the difference is night and day.

To put it into numbers (with equally invested teammates like P2 Isolde, P1 Flutterpage, P0 Kiperina):

  • P0 Beryl: Can achieve around 12 million damage in SPECIALIZED Boss Raid (Mane’s Bulletin).
  • P2 Beryl: Jumps to approximately 20 million damage.
  • P5 Beryl: Reaches a staggering 30 million+ damage.

Furthermore, Isolde's Portrays are also crucial (after new system "Metamorphosis/Transformation" introduced, unoffical translation). Her P2 accelerate her ramp-up time, allowing her to provide her full buffs in about 3 rounds instead of 5, and P3 provides extra Afterglow per round, which are important for Beryl's performance.

Final Verdict & Pull Recommendations

Overall Rating: T1

Beryl is an incredibly powerful Arcanist who is extremely dependent on Portrays.

  • At P0, she is clunky and difficult to use. She requires a long ramp-up time for both herself and Isolde, and her damage output falls short compared to established teams like Bloodtithe, Dynamo, or Impromptu. She is also dependent on owning Isolde.
  • At P2, she becomes a strong and effective DPS. Beryl's performance at P2 elevates her to a level where she can justify taking Flutterpage from other premier damage compositions, such as the duo of Ezio and Cassandra, or the powerful pairing of Anjo Nala and Kaalaa Baunaa.
  • At P5, she is a fully realized hypercarry with a near-100% chance to unleash a second, more powerful follow-up attack.

After Euphoria, Anjo Nala's ultimate damage increases nearly fivefold, and her synergy with Kaalaa Baunaa enables a devastating one-ultimate-per-turn cycle.

Pull Advice:

If you plan to invest in the Afterglow system, you should be prepared to pull for at least P2 Beryl, and you have Isolde (ideally with her own key Portrays). This makes the team's entry cost very high. For low-spenders or F2P, Beryl can feel underwhelming at P0.

Given her high investment cost, a monster-level support like Charon, who elevates Dynamo teams (existing ones with Lucy/Ulrich and future ones with Corvus/Brume), could be considered a higher priority pull.

However, Beryl is a limited character. Securing a single copy for collection purposes is a valid strategy. It is also possible that future patches will introduce new Afterglow teammates who resolve her current issues, allowing her to surpass the current top-tier teams. But as of now, she is a high-cost, high-reward powerhouse for dedicated players.

Conclusion

And with that, we have delved into the mechanics, builds, and high-stakes investment of Reverse: 1999's newest limited Arcanist, Beryl. We hope this deep dive has illuminated the unique potential and significant costs of the new Afterglow system.
