Bjorn Ironside is one of the strongest Epic commanders for players starting Rise of Kingdoms, especially if you are building an infantry-focused march. With Infantry, Conquering, and Skill specialties, he combines solid early-game durability with frequent skill damage and a valuable debuff that increases the skill damage enemies receive.
He is not designed to compete with modern Legendary commanders forever, but that is not really his purpose. Bjorn is inexpensive to build, easy to Expertise, and very effective during the early game and KvK1, making him an excellent temporary primary commander while your account develops.

In this Rise of Kingdoms Bjorn Ironside Build Guide, we'll cover his best talent trees, skill order, troop choices, and the best Bjorn Ironside pairings.

Bjorn is at his best while your kingdom is still young. His value falls as stronger Legendary commanders become available, but for an Epic commander he offers an impressive combination of combat stats, skill utility, and accessibility. Rise of Kingdoms Guides rates him as a useful early open-field and rally commander, while current AllClash rankings continue to place him highly among accessible early commanders.

Bjorn Ironside Skills Overview
Bjorn has five skills built around direct damage, infantry bonuses, attacking cities, and increasing the skill damage enemies receive. His first and fourth skills are especially important for regular open-field combat.

Fearless Fighter
Fearless Fighter is the core of Bjorn's entire build.
At Level 5, it deals 500 direct damage factor and makes the target take 10% more skill damage for 3 seconds.
The direct damage itself is decent for an Epic commander, but the second effect is more important. Bjorn can apply the debuff first, then his secondary commander's active skill follows while the target is still vulnerable.
This is exactly why skill-heavy commanders work so well behind him.
With Sun Tzu, for example:
Bjorn casts Fearless Fighter → enemy takes increased skill damage → Sun Tzu casts AoE skill
That simple interaction is one of the reasons Bjorn + Sun Tzu is such an effective beginner pairing.
Upgrade Priority: Max Fearless Fighter first.
Longboat Marauder
Longboat Marauder increases the attack of Bjorn's troops while attacking cities, reaching 15% at Level 5.
It fits Bjorn's Conquering specialty, but it is less valuable for most beginners than his open-field skills.
Although the bonus can help during early city attacks, you generally should not build Bjorn specifically around serious city rallying. Later in the game, dedicated Legendary rally commanders become far better options.
For most players, think of Longboat Marauder as a useful extra rather than the reason to use Bjorn.
Ambush
Ambush gives Bjorn's normal attacks a 10% chance to deal additional direct damage, with a maximum damage factor of 800. It can trigger once every five seconds.
Because the activation is chance-based, it is not completely reliable, but when it triggers it adds a noticeable amount of extra damage.
This skill fits particularly well with Bjorn's aggressive early-game identity: he already has respectable basic infantry stats, and Ambush gives his normal combat rotation another source of damage without requiring additional Rage.
Viking Lord
Viking Lord is one of the main reasons you should run full infantry whenever possible with Bjorn.
At maximum level, infantry units under his command receive:
+10% Infantry Attack
+10% Infantry Defense
For an Epic commander, a straightforward 10% boost to both offensive and defensive infantry stats is extremely useful.
It also makes Bjorn much more efficient as a primary commander during early open-field PvP, particularly when paired with another infantry-compatible commander such as Sun Tzu or Eulji Mundeok.
Booming Warsong
Booming Warsong is Bjorn's Expertise and significantly improves Fearless Fighter.
Once Expertised, his active skill causes the target and up to two nearby enemies in a forward-facing fan-shaped area to take 15% increased skill damage for 3 seconds.
This changes Bjorn from a simple single-target debuffer into a much stronger setup commander for AoE skills.
That is another major reason to Expertise him. As an Epic commander, reaching 5-5-5-5 is realistic, and his Expertise directly improves the feature that makes his best pairings work.
Bjorn Ironside Skill Order: How to Upgrade His Skills
Bjorn is an Epic commander, so his investment rules are much more forgiving than those of Legendary commanders.
Still, there is one important rule:
Get Fearless Fighter to Level 5 before rushing his stars.

Expertise Bjorn |
Unlike Cao Cao or other Legendary commanders where stopping points can save Gold Heads, there is little reason to deliberately leave Bjorn unfinished if you use him regularly.
Expertise is recommended, particularly because Booming Warsong improves the skill-damage debuff from 10% to 15% and allows it to affect nearby enemies.
Best Bjorn Ironside Talent Tree Builds in Rise of Kingdoms
Bjorn has three talent trees:
- Infantry
- Conquering
- Skill
For normal open-field gameplay, you do not need to heavily invest in Conquering. The two builds in your images instead focus on the trees that matter most for regular PvP: Skill and Infantry.
Your two screenshots represent two different approaches:
|

Best For |
Rating |
|
Skill Talent Tree Build |
Faster Rage, more active skills, higher burst |
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
|
Infantry Talent Tree Build |
More stats, durability, sustained open-field combat |
⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
Current Bjorn guides likewise distinguish between a Skill-focused setup for stronger Rage generation/burst and an Infantry-focused setup that trades some damage for better sustain.
Best Bjorn Ironside Skill Talent Tree Build
Recommended for: Early PvP, Skill Damage and Bjorn + Sun Tzu
Your first Talent Tree screenshot places a large amount of investment into the Skill branch, while also taking important Infantry talents.
The stats shown in the image are:
|

+6% |
|
Defense |
+8% |
|
Health |
+11% |
|
March Speed |
+6% |
The most noticeable stat here is Health +11%, but the real purpose of the build lies in the Skill talents rather than the raw stat summary.
Key Talents in This Skill Build
Your image includes several strong talents:
Burning Blood helps generate additional Rage through normal attacks.
Rejuvenate restores Rage whenever an active skill is used. This is extremely valuable for Bjorn because more Rage means more Fearless Fighter casts and therefore better uptime on his skill-damage vulnerability effect.
Feral Nature provides another way to gain Rage through normal attacks, strengthening the build's skill-cycling focus.
Clarity improves skill damage after an active skill is used, fitting naturally into a setup built around repeated skills.
Tactical Mastery provides additional active skill damage.
The Infantry side still contributes useful defensive talents such as Strong of Body, Hold the Line, and Heroic Shield, so this is not a pure glass-cannon setup.
Why Choose the Skill Build?
The main reason is simple:
Bjorn wants to use Fearless Fighter as often as possible.
Every time he uses it, he has another chance to make opponents more vulnerable to the secondary commander's active skill.
This becomes especially valuable with Sun Tzu, whose Rage generation and AoE damage benefit greatly from Bjorn's debuff.
Think of this build as a cycle:
Generate Rage → Fearless Fighter → secondary skill → regenerate Rage → repeat
Current build recommendations also generally favor the Skill-focused setup for Bjorn because it maximizes his active-skill and Rage mechanics.
Best Uses
This build works well for:
- Early open-field PvP
- KvK1
- Bjorn + Sun Tzu
- Smaller group fights
- Skill-focused infantry marches
If your goal is to get maximum offensive value from Bjorn rather than simply staying alive longer, this is the build I would recommend first.
Best Bjorn Ironside Infantry Talent Tree Build
Recommended for: Infantry Stats, Survivability and Sustained Fighting
Your second image invests much more heavily into the Infantry Talent Tree.
The final stats shown are approximately:
|
Stat |
Bonus |
|
Attack |
+8.5% |
|
Defense |
+10.5% |
|
Health |
+15.5% |
|
March Speed |
+12% |
Compared with the Skill build, you gain notably more Defense and March Speed, while still maintaining strong Health.
Key Talents in This Infantry Build
The screenshot includes several talents that strengthen a full-infantry march.
Iron Spear increases infantry damage against cavalry units.
Undying Fury provides Rage through normal attacks while using infantry.
Strong of Body increases troop Health.
Elite Soldiers provides broad stat bonuses when the army consists entirely of one troop type, making full infantry especially important.
Hold the Line gives normal attacks a chance to reduce incoming damage.
Snare of Thorns adds march-speed reduction against targets, making it harder for enemies to simply walk away from Bjorn.
The build also keeps valuable Skill talents including Burning Blood, Rejuvenate, Tactical Mastery, and Latent Power, so Bjorn still has respectable Rage and skill support.
Why Choose the Infantry Build?
This version is better if you value consistent open-field performance over maximum skill burst.
Bjorn is already relatively slow because he is an infantry commander, and the additional march speed in your build helps reduce that weakness.
At the same time, higher Defense and Infantry talents let him survive longer when fights become messy.
That makes this build especially attractive if:
- Bjorn regularly gets focused
- You are fighting longer open-field engagements
- You run full infantry
- You want slightly more forgiving gameplay
Current Bjorn guides describe the same basic trade-off: the Infantry build provides better sustain, while the Skill setup produces stronger Rage generation and burst output.

Best Bjorn Ironside Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms
Your pairing image includes Sun Tzu, Boudica, and Eulji Mundeok, which also match the three main Epic Bjorn pairings recommended by current Rise of Kingdoms build resources.

Bjorn Ironside + Sun Tzu
Best Overall Bjorn Pairing
If you're only going to build one Bjorn pairing, Bjorn + Sun Tzu should usually be the first choice.
Both commanders complement each other almost perfectly.
Bjorn's Fearless Fighter makes enemies take increased skill damage. Sun Tzu then follows with an AoE active skill that can hit several targets while generating additional Rage based on the number of enemies struck. This creates an extremely efficient early-game skill cycle.
The pairing gives you:
- Strong AoE damage
- Fast Rage generation
- Increased skill damage against Bjorn's targets
- Infantry synergy
- Excellent early PvP value
Bjorn is normally the primary commander, while Sun Tzu takes the secondary slot. This allows Bjorn's Talent Tree to support the march while ensuring his debuff lands before Sun Tzu's skill.
This is particularly good for:
- KvK1
- Early open-field fights
- Group battles
- F2P and low-spend accounts
Best Talent Tree: Skill Build.
Bjorn Ironside + Boudica
Best for Rage, Healing and Flexible Early Combat
Boudica is another accessible Epic option for Bjorn.
Her biggest advantage compared with Sun Tzu is added sustain and utility. Boudica provides Rage-related benefits and healing, which helps compensate for one of Bjorn's weaknesses: he has no built-in healing in his own kit.
This pairing provides:
- Additional Rage generation
- Healing
- Useful skill damage
- Low investment requirements
- Good versatility for developing accounts
It does not have the same explosive AoE synergy as Sun Tzu, but it is easier to keep fighting for longer.
Bjorn + Boudica is especially useful when your commander roster is still limited and you want one pairing that can handle a variety of early-game activities.
Best Talent Tree: Skill or Infantry, depending on whether you prefer damage or sustain.
Bjorn Ironside + Eulji Mundeok
Best Full-Infantry Alternative
Eulji Mundeok is a natural alternative for players who want to emphasize Bjorn's infantry identity.
Unlike Boudica, Eulji is built more directly around infantry and defensive utility. His active skill provides direct damage while reducing the enemy's Defense, allowing Bjorn's march to apply additional pressure after the debuff lands.
The combination offers:
- Strong infantry synergy
- Defensive stats
- Enemy Defense reduction
- Reliable early-game PvP
- Easy Epic investment
Current Bjorn pairing guides still list Eulji as a usable third option behind Sun Tzu and Boudica.
This pairing is not as strong at skill cycling as Bjorn + Sun Tzu, but it can feel more stable when running a full infantry army.
Best Talent Tree: Infantry Build.
What Troops Should Bjorn Ironside Use?
For most serious Bjorn builds, use a full infantry march.
The biggest reason is Viking Lord. Its Attack and Defense bonuses only apply to infantry units, meaning non-infantry troops do not benefit from one of Bjorn's strongest passive skills.
A full infantry march also synergizes better with:
- Bjorn's Infantry Talent Tree
- Elite Soldiers
- Sun Tzu
- Eulji Mundeok
- Infantry equipment and armaments
Early in the game, you may need to use mixed troops simply because your troop count is limited. That is fine temporarily. But as your account develops, full infantry should be your goal when Bjorn is the primary commander. AllClash likewise notes that while mixed marches are common early, infantry is the natural troop preference for Bjorn.
Is Bjorn Ironside Worth Investing In?
For new players, yes.
Bjorn is one of the easier commanders to recommend because he is Epic rather than Legendary. Developing him does not require valuable Legendary Sculptures, and his strong early-game performance gives you something useful immediately.
For New and F2P Players
Bjorn is particularly valuable if:
- You want to play infantry
- You are preparing for KvK1
- You already have Sun Tzu
- Your Legendary commanders are not developed yet
- You need an inexpensive primary commander
The Bjorn + Sun Tzu pairing alone is enough to justify building him on many early accounts.
For Experienced Players
Bjorn eventually becomes a transition commander.
Modern Legendary infantry commanders offer much stronger stats, skills, survivability, and late-game utility. Bjorn therefore should not consume resources that would slow down your long-term Legendary investments.
That does not make your investment wasted.
He remains useful for:
- Early progression
- Secondary marches
- Canyon/Expedition situations
- Accounts with limited Legendary options
Rise of Kingdoms Guides similarly notes that Bjorn is valuable in newer kingdoms but becomes much less competitive as stronger commanders become available.
Bjorn Ironside Pros and Cons
|
Pros |
Cons |
|
✅ Excellent early-game Epic commander |
❌ Falls off significantly in late game |
|
✅ Easy and inexpensive to Expertise |
❌ No built-in healing |
|
✅ Strong infantry Attack and Defense |
❌ Infantry movement can feel slow |
|
✅ Great skill-damage debuff |
❌ City-attacking skill has limited open-field value |
|
✅ Excellent synergy with Sun Tzu |
❌ Less durable than modern Legendary infantry commanders |
|
✅ Good KvK1 option |
❌ Not a long-term rally commander |
His biggest advantage is value for investment. You are not building Bjorn because he will dominate late-game KvK; you are building him because he can give a new account a strong infantry march without draining important Legendary resources.
FAQ About Bjorn Ironside in Rise of Kingdoms
What is the best Bjorn Ironside Talent Tree?
For most players, the Skill Talent Tree is the best Bjorn Ironside build because it improves Rage generation and allows him to cast Fearless Fighter more frequently.
If you prefer better survivability and stronger infantry stats, use the Infantry Talent Tree shown in our second image. Current build guides generally recommend Skill for stronger burst and Infantry for greater sustain.
What is the best Bjorn Ironside pairing?
Bjorn Ironside + Sun Tzu is generally the best early-game pairing.
Bjorn increases the skill damage his targets receive, while Sun Tzu provides AoE skill damage and excellent Rage generation. The two mechanics reinforce each other extremely well.
Boudica and Eulji Mundeok are good alternatives.
Should Bjorn or Sun Tzu be the primary commander?
For the classic pairing, Bjorn should usually be primary and Sun Tzu secondary.
This ensures Bjorn's active skill lands first, applying the skill-damage vulnerability before Sun Tzu's active skill activates. Existing pairing guides also recommend this order.
Is Bjorn Ironside good for F2P players?
Yes. Bjorn is particularly F2P-friendly because he is an Epic commander and does not require Legendary Sculptures.
He can provide a strong early infantry march while you save valuable Gold Heads for long-term Legendary commanders.
Should I Expertise Bjorn Ironside?
Yes, if you plan to use him.
His Expertise, Booming Warsong, improves Fearless Fighter by increasing the skill-damage vulnerability to 15% and allowing it to affect nearby enemies.
Since he is Epic, reaching 5-5-5-5 is much more practical than Expertising a Legendary commander.
Is Bjorn Ironside good for KvK1?
Yes. KvK1 is one of the stages where Bjorn offers the most value, particularly for new infantry players using Bjorn + Sun Tzu.
His effectiveness declines in later Seasons as stronger Legendary commanders become common.
Should Bjorn use infantry only?
Ideally, yes.
Viking Lord increases only Infantry Attack and Defense, and the Infantry Talent Tree also rewards full-infantry armies.
Mixed troops are acceptable when your account is very new, but full infantry gives Bjorn the most value.
Is Bjorn Ironside good for attacking cities?
He has a Conquering specialty and Longboat Marauder increases Attack while attacking cities, so he does have some early city-attacking value.
However, you should not heavily build him as a long-term rally commander. Strong Legendary commanders eventually outperform him by a large margin.
Conclusion
Bjorn Ironside is one of the easiest Epic commanders to recommend for new infantry players in Rise of Kingdoms. He is inexpensive to build, provides useful infantry stats, and has a strong skill-damage debuff that works particularly well with skill-focused secondary commanders.
For most players, the Skill Talent Tree is the best Bjorn build because it improves Rage generation and keeps Fearless Fighter active more frequently. If you prefer better durability and infantry stats, the Infantry Talent Tree from our second build is a strong alternative.
Pairing is equally straightforward: Bjorn + Sun Tzu is the best overall choice, Boudica adds healing and Rage utility, while Eulji Mundeok offers a more infantry-focused option.

Bjorn will eventually be replaced by stronger Legendary commanders, but for early progression and KvK1, he gives beginners an impressive amount of value for the resources required.
