Minecraft Live September 2026 is over, and Mojang definitely saved its biggest surprise for players who have been asking for more exploration.
Forget a new biome or a handful of mobs for a second. Minecraft is getting an entirely new dimension.
It’s called the Sift, and it will become the fourth official dimension in Minecraft, joining the Overworld, Nether, and End. Even more surprisingly, this is the first new dimension Minecraft has added in more than 14 years.
There is one important catch, though: the Sift is arriving in two different stages.
Players will get their first proper look at it in Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29, 2026, while the Sift is scheduled to come to Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027.
So, what exactly is the Sift, what do we already know about it, and what did Mojang reveal during Minecraft Live? Let’s break it down.

What Is the Sift in Minecraft?
The Sift is a completely new dimension within the Minecraft universe.
For longtime Minecraft players, that is a much bigger deal than a normal game drop. The Overworld, Nether, and End have defined Minecraft’s world structure for well over a decade, and Mojang has now officially confirmed that the Sift will join them as a fourth dimension.
The first version of the Sift appears in Minecraft Dungeons II.
Unlike the original Minecraft Dungeons, which was largely built around individual missions, Dungeons II features a more interconnected world. While exploring it, players can discover mysterious rifts. Enter one of these rifts, and you can be transported into the Sift.
Mojang describes the dimension as vibrant, strange, and filled with souls. Two locations have already been named:
-
The Meadow
-
The Carapace
The footage shown so far gives the Sift a very different atmosphere from the Nether or End. Rather than feeling empty or purely hostile, it looks colorful, otherworldly, and almost alive, with unusual terrain and supernatural elements throughout the environment.

The Sift Is Coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027
Here’s the announcement that really matters for regular Minecraft players.
The Sift is not staying exclusive to Minecraft Dungeons II.
Mojang officially confirmed during Minecraft Live that the dimension will also come to Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition in 2027. When that happens, Minecraft will officially have four dimensions.
We also got a brief look at how the Sift appears in regular Minecraft, including a glimpse of one of the mobs that lives there.
However, Mojang is clearly keeping most of the details under wraps for now.
What We Still Don't Know About the Sift
There are already plenty of theories online about how players will reach the Sift, what its portal might look like, and whether existing structures such as the Ancient City will be involved.
For now, those are still theories.
Mojang has not officially confirmed:
-
How players will enter the Sift in Java or Bedrock
-
What materials will be needed to access it
-
Whether it has a traditional portal
-
Its full list of biomes
-
Its complete mob lineup
-
New ores, blocks, weapons, or resources
-
Bosses or major structures
-
Its exact 2027 release date
That distinction is important because the rift system belongs to Minecraft Dungeons II based on what Mojang has shown so far. We should not assume Java and Bedrock will use exactly the same method.
For now, Dungeons II will basically serve as our first chance to properly explore the Sift before the dimension makes the jump into the main game.
Minecraft Dungeons II Launches September 29
The Sift reveal also tied directly into another major announcement: Minecraft Dungeons II launches September 29, 2026.
The sequel expands significantly on the structure of the original game. Instead of simply jumping between individual missions, players will explore a more interconnected world filled with enemies, quests, loot, rifts, and new areas.
And yes, you can jump now.
The story also introduces a new crisis. The world's ecosystem has fallen out of balance, illagers are causing trouble again, and they have even formed an Illager High Council.
But for players mainly interested in the future of vanilla Minecraft, Dungeons II matters for another reason: it will give us our first real opportunity to explore the Sift and see what this new dimension is supposed to feel like.
Ice Caves Are Also Coming
The Sift wasn't the only major Minecraft update shown during the event.
Mojang also revealed new Ice Caves, continuing its push toward making exploration a bigger part of Minecraft.
These freezing underground areas include ice, calcite, icicles, and ice crystals.
Icicles naturally form on cave ceilings, while ice crystals grow from the ground and give off a soft light, giving the caves a very different look from existing underground environments.
But they aren't just pretty.
A new frozen zombie variant will appear in these areas. Its attacks can apply a freezing effect, and some frozen zombies can even throw ice balls at players.
In other words, if regular zombies weren't annoying enough underground, Mojang found a way to make them colder and meaner.

Other Minecraft Live September 2026 Announcements
The rest of Minecraft Live also brought several smaller—but still interesting—announcements.
Mojang discussed its new Creator Platform initiative, which aims to make Minecraft creation tools easier to use so more players can create, manage, and share their own content.
Meanwhile, Minecraft World is set to open at Chessington World of Adventures Resort near London in 2027. The attraction will include the first Minecraft World Hotel and Escape the Nether, described as the world's first Minecraft roller coaster.
Minecraft is also coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, while Minecraft Education is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The Sift Could Be Minecraft's Biggest Exploration Update in Years
There are still far more questions than answers surrounding the Sift—and that's probably intentional.
We don't know how its portal works in vanilla Minecraft. We don't know its full roster of mobs, blocks, biomes, structures, or resources. And Mojang hasn't given the Java and Bedrock version an exact release date beyond 2027.
But what has been confirmed is already significant.
After more than 14 years with the Overworld, Nether, and End, Minecraft is finally getting a fourth dimension.
And we won't have to wait until 2027 to get our first taste of it. With Minecraft Dungeons II launching on September 29, the Sift is about to open its doors for the first time.
Now we just need Mojang to tell us how we're supposed to get there in vanilla Minecraft.
Conclusion
The Sift was easily one of the biggest reveals from Minecraft Live September 2026. With its debut in Minecraft Dungeons II and a full Java and Bedrock release planned for 2027, this new dimension could open a major new chapter for Minecraft exploration. For now, all eyes are on September 29 for our first real look inside the Sift.
