Crypts come in three types in Total Battle: common, rare and epic. Each type burns its own tar and covers its own level range. Each crypt favors specific crafting materials or gems. Below, you will find a quick comparison of all three types and the research that unlocks each level. You also get the full list of crypts with their main materials, clan chest points by level, and the Carter setup that clears crypts in one march. Let's follow LDShop and break down everything a crypter needs in one place.

Crypts are unguarded spots on the map. You send a captain, not an army. Every crypt you finish drops a chest for your clan, so crypting grows your whole clan's wealth. If you are still learning how the kingdom map, captains and clans work, start with our beginner guide.
Common and epic crypts can drop two of their signature material instead of one. Rare crypts do not give this double gem chance.

The table reveals three useful patterns:
- Level 25 commons pay over three times more than level 20s. Push for 25 as soon as you can clear it in one march.
- Level 15 epics give the same points as level 15 commons. Save your epic tar for level 20 and above.
- Rare 30s slightly outscore epic 30s. Rare tar is also easier to collect, so rare 30s are the better points deal.

How to Get Tar and Keys for Crypts
- Common Tar: Tar Workshop, Wellspring Ruins, clan chests, Gold purchases and the Triumphal Challenge.
- Rare and Epic Tar: Tournaments, clan chests, sales, Gold purchases and the Triumphal Challenge. No building produces them.
- Rare Crypt Keys: Capture an Elven Citadel of the same level as the crypt. You can also buy keys in the Fenrir's Invasion shop during Ragnarok.
Rare and epic tar run out fastest, and Gold is one of the few steady ways to restock them. A quick total battle top up keeps your Gold ready for tar purchases, so your crypt runs don't stall between tournaments. The best platform to make the top-up is LDShop, it lets players top up for less and it is a great way to save money.
Active clans collect huge amounts of tar from events against the Ancients. Your Tar Workshop also stops producing once storage passes its capacity. So talent points in tar production are rarely worth it.
Best Captain for Total Battle Crypts: Carter Setup
Carter is the only captain with crypt bonuses. His crypt efficiency and tar capacity grow with his level. Players report that these bonuses stop growing at level 300.

Crypt Exploration Efficiency Bonuses to Stack
Turn on every one of these before a crypting session:
- Academy: Crypt Exploration Efficiency, Exploration Cost and Chance to Explore Twice.
- Hero talents: Crypt efficiency and cost nodes in Archeology, saved as a separate crypt preset.
- Premium title: Great Archaeologist, which boosts crypt efficiency and march speed.
- Personal bonus: Crypt efficiency under the plus icon.
- Watchtower: Reveals crypts on the map, including high-level ones.
- Extra tar: Carry more tar than the crypt needs to get a 10% efficiency bonus.
Your hero's talent points also matter outside crypting. Keep your combat preset built around a strong hero, and check our hero tier list before you invest in one.
Crypt Efficiency vs Cost Explained
Efficiency decides how much of a crypt one march clears. Cost decides how much tar each march burns.
The game rounds marches up. A crypt that needs 6.2 marches still takes 7. So an efficiency upgrade only saves tar when it removes a full march. Cost reductions save tar on every march.
Note how many marches your target crypt takes right now. Then stack efficiency toward the next whole-march breakpoint.

Crypting Tips for Faster Clan Growth
- Clear every crypt in one march. If you need two or three captains, drop a level.
- Finish what you start, because other players can complete your half-explored crypt and take the chest.
- Never explore a rare crypt someone else unlocked, since that counts as poaching.
- Clear all crypts within a short radius before marching further out.
- Redeem the latest gift codes regularly, since free rewards help you save Gold for tar.
Conclusion
Crypts in Total Battle work best when you treat them as a planned hunt, not a random click. Use the crypt list to target the materials you need. Use the chest points table to pick levels that give your clan the most value. Build Carter properly and stack every efficiency bonus. Once you can clear crypts in one march, you will grow faster and get far more from every drop of tar in Total Battle.
