Centre-backs dominate the list, taking 11 of the 15 places, but the profiles are far from identical. Gabriel's 91 DEF makes him better suited to holding position and winning tackles around the box, while Pacho's 80 PAC gives him more scope to recover when the defensive line is caught higher up the pitch. Nuno and Hakimi offer the opposite kind of value: their elite Pace allows them to cover the flank quickly and still push forward without leaving as much recovery distance behind them.

An elite defender can change the whole feel of your back line. With more FC 27 Coins available through LDShop, you have more room to target the right player for your setup.

Who Is the Best Defender in EA FC 27?

Best Defender in EA FC 27

By EA's overall Rank, Nuno Mendes is the highest-ranked defender. His 89 OVR comes with 94 PAC, 86 DRI, 84 DEF and 80 PHY. The 94 Acceleration and 94 Sprint Speed allow him to close down wide attackers or recover after joining an attack, while 89 Standing Tackle gives that speed a defensive purpose rather than making him simply a fast wing-back.

If the priority is pure defending, however, Gabriel has the strongest raw defensive profile. His game-leading 91 DEF includes 92 Defensive Awareness, 91 Standing Tackle and 90 Sliding Tackle. Those ratings make him particularly suited to maintaining position around the penalty area and completing challenges once he gets tight to an attacker. His 89 Strength and Aggression also help in physical contests, although 64 PAC means mistakes in a high line will be harder to recover from.

For a more mobile centre-back, Willian Pacho has arguably the best balance on paper. His 80 PAC, 90 DEF and 86 PHY combine defensive security with recovery speed. In particular, 85 Sprint Speed helps when chasing runners toward his own goal, while 91 Defensive Awareness and 93 Standing Tackle give him the positioning and challenge quality needed once he gets there.

FC 27 Best Defenders by Position: Top 8

The overall ranking naturally favours centre-backs, so splitting the player pool by position gives a more useful picture. CBs need defensive security and physical presence, while full-backs benefit much more from speed, passing and the ability to carry possession up the flank.

The tables below use each player's primary position, not alternate positions.

Best Centre-Backs (CB)

For centre-backs, DEF remains the foundation because it reflects areas such as Defensive Awareness, Interceptions and tackling. PAC determines how forgiving the card can be when space opens behind the defence, while PHY becomes particularly useful when contesting shoulder-to-shoulder situations or dealing with powerful strikers.

Gabriel gives you the strongest defensive ceiling, but Pacho and Saliba provide more insurance when defending space. Their higher Pace makes it easier to recover against runs in behind instead of depending entirely on perfect positioning.

Schlotterbeck is especially interesting at 81 PAC / 86 DEF / 84 PHY. He gives up some defensive rating to Gabriel or Pacho, but his mobility allows him to step out more aggressively and still have a better chance of recovering. Marquinhos, meanwhile, adds 75 PAS, making him more comfortable when the centre-back is expected to help progress possession rather than immediately play the safest pass.

Best Left-Backs (LB)

Full-backs have to defend much larger spaces than most centre-backs, so Pace has an obvious practical value: it helps them match quick wingers, recover after overlapping and close down the far side of the pitch. Passing and Dribbling then determine how useful they remain once possession is won.

Nuno is the clear all-round leader. His 94 PAC means he can make aggressive forward runs while still having elite recovery speed, and 86 DRI makes him much safer when carrying the ball out of pressure. His 84 DEF prevents those attacking qualities from coming at the expense of basic defensive reliability.

Dimarco offers a very different type of full-back. His 85 PAS includes 91 Crossing, so he is much better suited to providing width and delivering the final ball from deeper or overlapping positions. Hincapié trades that creativity for 84 DEF and 81 PHY, which makes him more useful when you want the left-back to stay compact and defend more like an extra centre-back.

Lewis Hall's 81 PAS and 82 DRI make him a cleaner buildup option, while Nico O'Reilly's combination of 83 PAC, 81 DEF and 81 PHY gives him the more balanced defensive profile of the two.

Best Right-Backs (RB)

Right-back follows the same basic logic, but the leading players show particularly different approaches. Hakimi and Llorente provide pace and forward running, Koundé leans more defensive, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is fundamentally a passing specialist.

Hakimi is the easiest player here to use in an aggressive full-back role. His 92 PAC and 95 Stamina allow him to repeatedly cover the right flank, while 81 PAS and 82 DRI help turn those runs into actual progression rather than simply raw speed. His 85 Interceptions and 85 Standing Tackle also give him enough defensive quality to recover possession once he catches the attacker.

Llorente provides a similar transition threat with 91 PAC and 93 Stamina, but 83 PHY gives him more physical presence when tracking back or contesting loose balls. Koundé is the safer defensive option: 83 DEF, 83 PHY and 84 Strength make him better suited to staying home and dealing with direct duels.

Trent is the specialist at the other end of the spectrum. His 89 PAS can help bypass pressure or switch play from deep, but the lower 77 DEF and 72 PHY mean you are accepting more defensive risk in exchange for superior distribution.

Best FC 27 Defenders in Europe's Big Five Leagues

League rankings can also be useful when building an Ultimate Team squad around a particular competition. More importantly, each league's top three highlights a different kind of defensive strength rather than simply three similar high-OVR cards.

The Premier League's leading group is built around traditional centre-back quality. Gabriel offers the strongest pure tackling and positioning numbers, while Saliba's extra Pace makes him better equipped to defend runners in a higher line. Van Dijk sits between those extremes, pairing 89 DEF with 85 PHY for a more physical penalty-area presence.

That also gives Arsenal an interesting complementary pairing on paper: Gabriel can hold the central space and attack duels, while Saliba has more speed available to cover behind him.

LALIGA's top three cover three different roles instead of concentrating everything at centre-back. Cubarsí is particularly interesting because his face-card 69 PAS hides 88 Short Passing and 88 Long Passing. That makes him much better at starting buildup through the centre than the headline number suggests, especially when opponents press the first pass.

Cucurella is more defence-first, with 84 DEF helping him stay secure on the left, while Llorente's 91 PAC gives LALIGA squads a much more aggressive option on the opposite flank. His speed and 93 Stamina should make repeated forward-and-back runs far easier to sustain.

All three in Bundesliga sit at 87 OVR, but their strengths produce different defensive uses. Schlotterbeck's 81 PAC makes him the best of the trio at covering space quickly, while Upamecano is only one point behind at 80 and combines that mobility with 83 PHY.

Tah is significantly slower at 62 PAC, but his 91 Strength, 89 Heading Accuracy and 87 DEF make him much more suited to protecting the box, contesting aerial balls and dealing with physical strikers. In other words, Schlotterbeck and Upamecano offer more recovery ability; Tah offers more of a traditional stopper profile.

Serie A has perhaps the clearest contrast between buildup and pure defending. Dimarco's 85 PAS and 91 Crossing make him a natural outlet on the left, while Bastoni's 76 PAS, 78 DRI and 84 Long Passing give him more confidence progressing the ball from centre-back.

Bremer goes in the opposite direction. His 85 PAC / 87 DEF / 85 PHY profile is built for closing space and winning duels rather than controlling possession. That combination allows him to defend more aggressively because he has both the pace to recover and the strength to finish the challenge.

Ligue 1's top three form the most complete defensive unit of the Big Five because Paris SG supplies quality in the centre and on both flanks. Nuno's 94 PAC and Hakimi's 92 PAC allow the full-backs to play aggressively without giving up as much recovery ability, while Pacho's 90 DEF and 86 PHY provide a much more conservative anchor between them.

That combination also makes their strengths complementary: the full-backs can provide width and progression while Pacho is better equipped to stay central and clean up transitions.

Best Defenders to Use in FC 27 Ultimate Team

Best Defenders to Use in FC 27 Ultimate Team

The highest OVR defender will not automatically be the most useful Ultimate Team card. Centre-backs can be exposed if they lack recovery speed, full-backs need enough technical quality to contribute after winning possession, and Physicality becomes more valuable when a defender regularly faces direct contact.

PlayStyles, Roles, body type and the final gameplay balance will also influence the meta, so the picks below are based on EA's current ratings rather than being treated as a finished post-launch tier list.

Willian Pacho — Best CB Profile on Paper

Pacho's 80 PAC / 90 DEF / 86 PHY is one of the cleanest combinations available to a base centre-back.

The 91 Defensive Awareness should help him hold better defensive positions, while 93 Standing Tackle gives him elite quality once he commits to the challenge. Crucially, 85 Sprint Speed means he is not completely dependent on getting that positioning perfect—he has enough recovery speed to chase an attacker when the line is broken. His 89 Strength then helps him complete the defensive action once he gets alongside the runner.

The compromise is his limited buildup profile. With 63 PAS and 65 DRI, he makes more sense as the defender who wins the ball and moves it safely than the player expected to carry possession through the press.

Nuno Mendes — Best All-Round Full-Back

Nuno's greatest advantage is not simply that he has 94 PAC; it is that the speed sits beside genuine technical and defensive quality.

His 94 Acceleration lets him react quickly to a winger changing direction or bursting beyond him, while 94 Sprint Speed is valuable over longer recovery distances. When possession changes hands, 86 DRI and 87 Ball Control make him capable of carrying the ball forward rather than immediately needing a midfielder to take over.

With 89 Standing Tackle as well, there is very little wasted in the profile. He can recover, win the ball and then become part of the next attack.

Gabriel — Best Pure Stopper

Gabriel is the player to choose when the priority is simply making defensive actions as reliable as possible.

His 92 Defensive Awareness helps explain the 91 DEF headline rating, while 91 Standing Tackle and 90 Sliding Tackle give him elite numbers for both controlled challenges and last-ditch interventions. The combination of 89 Strength and 89 Aggression should also make him difficult to overpower once he gets close enough to engage.

The 64 PAC creates a clear tactical tradeoff. He should be much more comfortable defending in front of him than chasing an attacker over a large distance, so pairing him with a quicker partner or avoiding an excessively exposed back line makes more sense on paper.

Achraf Hakimi — Best Attacking Right-Back

Hakimi's 92 PAC and 95 Stamina give him the physical tools to repeatedly move between both ends of the pitch. That matters for an attacking full-back because getting forward is only useful if the player still has the ability to recover after possession is lost.

His 81 PAS includes 86 Short Passing and 84 Crossing, so he can contribute to combinations and deliveries once he reaches advanced areas. Defensively, 85 Interceptions and 85 Standing Tackle give him enough ball-winning quality to make those recovery runs count instead of simply catching the opponent.

Bremer — Best Pace-and-Power CB

Bremer is one of the clearest examples of why OVR alone does not determine how attractive a defender looks for Ultimate Team.

His 85 PAC is the highest among the centre-backs in the overall Top 15, while 87 DEF and 85 PHY keep the defensive foundation strong. That speed makes him particularly useful when stepping out of the line or defending a transition, because he has more margin to recover after an aggressive challenge.

Once he reaches the attacker, 89 Strength helps in shoulder-to-shoulder battles, while 95 Jumping adds obvious value against aerial balls. The weakness is 59 PAS, so his role is much more about stopping attacks than starting them.

DEF vs Overall Rating: Notable Defensive Specialists

Another way to find interesting defenders is to compare DEF with OVR. A large positive gap does not automatically make a card better, but it shows players whose overall profile is heavily concentrated on actual defending.

The DEF–OVR Gap below is not an EA metric; it is simply the difference between the two official ratings.

Orbán and De Vrij are the clearest specialists here. Their DEF ratings sit three points above their OVR, meaning a relatively modest overall card still contains high-level defensive qualities. Orbán, for example, has 87 Defensive Awareness and 87 Standing Tackle; the drawback is just 54 PAC, so using those defensive numbers effectively depends heavily on keeping him in position rather than asking him to recover into open space.

Eric García provides a more mobile alternative. His 79 PAC sits alongside 86 DEF and 77 PAS, so his defensive rating is not isolated from the ability to step forward or circulate possession.

Pacho and Nuno make the biggest gains at +4 DEF. Pacho's upgrade is particularly significant because it comes without sacrificing his 80 PAC or 86 PHY, turning an already athletic centre-back into a much more complete defensive package. Nuno's increase from 80 to 84 DEF similarly makes his pace-heavy full-back profile less dependent on recovery speed alone.

Gabriel and Saliba both gain three DEF points, but those upgrades reinforce different strengths. Gabriel becomes an even stronger positional stopper, while Saliba combines the new 90 DEF with considerably more Pace, which should make his defensive rating easier to apply over larger areas of the pitch.

Van Dijk moves from 90 to 89 DEF, but 89 DEF and 85 PHY still leave him among the strongest traditional centre-back profiles in FC 27.

FAQ

Is DEF important in EA FC 27?

Yes. DEF summarises key defensive qualities including Interceptions, Heading Accuracy, Defensive Awareness, Standing Tackle and Sliding Tackle, so it is especially important for centre-backs.

It still should not be judged alone. A high DEF player can win challenges reliably when positioned correctly, but low Pace makes mistakes or runs in behind harder to recover from. That is why Gabriel's 91 DEF and Pacho's 90 DEF can produce different practical profiles: Gabriel offers the higher defensive ceiling, while Pacho adds much stronger recovery mobility.

Who is the best defender in FC 27?

Nuno Mendes is the highest-ranked primary defender in EA's current database at 89 OVR, while Gabriel and Pacho are also rated 89. Nuno offers the strongest full-back package, Gabriel leads pure Defending, and Pacho has arguably the best balance of Pace, DEF and PHY at centre-back.

Who is the best CB in FC 27?

Gabriel and Willian Pacho share the highest CB Overall Rating at 89. Gabriel leads with 91 DEF, making him the stronger pure stopper, while Pacho combines 80 PAC, 90 DEF and 86 PHY, giving him more recovery ability when defending space.

Who is the best LB in FC 27?

Nuno Mendes leads primary LBs at 89 OVR. His combination of 94 PAC, 86 DRI and 84 DEF allows him to defend quick wide players, recover after attacking runs and still carry possession effectively.

Who is the best RB in FC 27?

Achraf Hakimi is the highest-rated primary RB at 88 OVR. His 92 PAC and 95 Stamina are ideal for covering the entire flank, while 81 PAS, 82 DRI and 82 DEF keep him effective at both ends rather than making him a pure speed option.

Who has the highest Defending rating in FC 27?

Gabriel leads the current database with 91 DEF. Willian Pacho and William Saliba follow at 90.

Who is the fastest defender in the Top 15?

Nuno Mendes leads this Top 15 with 94 PAC, followed by Achraf Hakimi at 92. Among centre-backs, Bremer is the fastest at 85 PAC, giving him significantly more recovery speed than most of the highest-rated CBs.

Who looks like the best CB for Ultimate Team?

Based on the current base-card ratings alone, Willian Pacho has arguably the strongest overall blend at 80 PAC / 90 DEF / 86 PHY. Gabriel provides superior pure defending, while Bremer offers even more Pace.

The final answer will depend on PlayStyles, Roles, body type, formation and how the FC 27 gameplay meta develops after launch.

Conclusion

FC 27 offers very different solutions across the back line, from Gabriel's elite defensive security and Pacho's mobility to the two-way threat of Nuno Mendes and Hakimi. The best choice comes down to whether your system needs a pure stopper, recovery speed, physical presence or more contribution in possession.
