EA FC 27 Ultimate Team gives you more ways to keep a good card relevant instead of replacing it the moment a better promo drops. Evolutions now come with branching Pathways, chain previews, repeatable upgrades, and more ways to shape a player around your squad.

This FC 27 FUT player growth guide covers how those upgrade systems work, what can actually improve a Player Item, and what to check before committing to your next Evo.

How Does Player Growth Work in FC 27 Ultimate Team?

Unlike Career Mode, FUT players do not grow naturally through age, match experience, or Potential.

Instead, a Player Item becomes stronger through specific Ultimate Team systems.

The main progression routes are:

Growth Method

How It Works

Main Result

Evolutions

Complete Evo requirements or challenges

Permanent Player Item upgrades

Training Camp Evolutions

Leave an eligible player in Training Camp for a set period

Passive permanent upgrades

PlayStyles Lab

Customize PlayStyles on eligible items

Changes how the player performs

Live Items

Meet real-world football milestones

Automatic campaign upgrades

Evolutions give you the most direct control over how a player develops. Live Items such as Ones to Watch and Destined for Glory, meanwhile, improve according to their own campaign rules and real-world football performances.

The important point is that FC 27 does not have one universal “player growth formula.” Each upgrade system follows its own requirements.

Start Your Player Progression with Season 1 Rewards

Season 1 also gives you an early way to start building your squad. The Standard and Premium Reward Tracks include Ones to Watch Player Items, Packs, and PlayStyle-based Evolutions, giving you both live-upgrade cards and new options for player development from the start of FC 27.

FC 27 Evolutions Explained

Evolutions, usually shortened to Evos, remain the main way to develop your own players in Ultimate Team.

You select an eligible Player Item, submit it to an Evolution and complete the required challenges to unlock permanent upgrades. Different Evolutions can have requirements based on factors such as the player's position, OVR or Attributes, so not every card can enter every Evo. EA says FC 27 will use more targeted positional and Attribute requirements to preserve each player's individual strengths instead of turning every upgraded card into the same type of all-rounder.

Once a Player Item is placed into a standard Evolution slot, it becomes untradeable while the Evolution is applied.

Depending on the Evolution, completing levels can improve parts of the player's build such as:

  • OVR
  • Individual Attributes
  • PlayStyles
  • Other Evo-specific rewards

The exact boosts always depend on the Evolution, so check the full reward path before submitting a player.

Evolution Pathways Give You Different Ways to Build the Same Player

One of the biggest new features in FC 27 is Evolution Pathways.

Previously, most Evolutions followed one fixed progression route. In FC 27, selected Evolutions can instead offer different upgrade choices.

EA's own example shows one path improving Dribbling and adding Technical, while another improves Defensive Awareness and adds a defensive PlayStyle. Not every Evolution uses Pathways; traditional linear Evolutions still exist.

That changes how you should think about Evo players.

Instead of asking:

“Which path gives me the highest OVR?”

Ask:

“What role do I actually want this player to fill?”

A central midfielder could be shaped more toward ball progression, for example, while another version of the same card could focus more heavily on defensive work.

FC 27 Evolutions are therefore becoming less about simply upgrading a card and more about choosing its identity.

Evolution Reward Choices

Evolution Reward Choices

FC 27 also allows some Evolution levels to offer multiple reward choices.

You can preview the available rewards and switch between them before making a final decision. Your selection is only locked once you complete that Evolution level and claim the reward.

This matters because two versions of the same Evolution player can potentially develop differently even before you begin chaining them into additional Evos.

When choosing between rewards, look beyond the headline OVR. Consider which Attributes and PlayStyles actually suit the player's position and how you intend to use them.

Evolution Chain Preview: Plan Before You Commit

Evolution Chain Preview

Evo chaining is much easier to plan in FC 27 thanks to the new Evolution Chain Preview.

You can preview multiple Evolutions together before applying them. Once you add another Evo to the preview, the game uses the Player Item's projected stats after the previous Evolution to filter which Evolutions would still be available.

This is a major improvement for players who build long-term Evo cards.

An immediate upgrade may look strong, but raising a particular Attribute or OVR too far could potentially make the player ineligible for another Evolution with stricter entry requirements.

A good FC 27 Evo strategy is therefore:

Check the next step before committing to the current one.

The strongest upgrade today is not always the best route for the card long term.

What Are Repeatable Evolutions?

Another important FC 27 mechanic is Repeatable Evolutions.

Some Evolutions can be completed more than once. You can even submit the same Player Item to the same Repeatable Evolution again, provided the upgraded card still meets that Evo's entry requirements.

There are two restrictions to remember.

If the Evolution requires Coins or FC Points, each repeat requires a separate payment. Paying once does not unlock every repeat.

Some Repeatable Evolutions can also have a cooldown, meaning you must wait before starting the same Evo again.

Repeatable Evos create another layer of planning: after completing one cycle, always check whether the upgraded card remains eligible before assuming you can run it through the same path again.

Some Evolutions require Coins to unlock, and Repeatable Evolutions may charge the cost again each time. If you are short on budget for your next upgrade, you can also check FC 27 Coins at LDShop to keep your Evo plan moving without waiting to rebuild your balance.

Training Camp Evolutions: Passive Player Growth

Not every FC 27 Evolution requires you to play matches.

Training Camp Evolutions allow players to develop passively. When you submit a Player Item to one, that player becomes temporarily unavailable for use, although they remain visible in your Club. Once the required time has passed, you can claim the upgrade and use the player again, including in another Evolution.

Training Camp Evo durations can range from a few hours to more than 30 days. EA notes that higher-level rewards may require longer completion times.

FC 27 is expanding Training Camp Evolutions specifically to give more lower-rated Player Items an accessible starting point for an Evo journey.

That makes them particularly useful for club favourites or low-rated players who may not immediately fit stronger standard Evolutions.

Can You Remove an Evolution in FC 27?

Remove an Evolution in FC 27

Yes.

This is an important change to understand because old advice about Evo cards being permanently locked is no longer fully accurate.

In FC 27, you can remove either:

  • the most recently applied Evolution; or
  • all Evolutions applied to the Player Item.

Before confirming, the game shows how the removal will affect the player's stats. Removing an Evolution is final and cannot be undone.

There is also a major tradeability rule.

If your Player Item was originally tradeable before receiving any Evolutions, removing all Evolutions restores its tradeable status.

This gives players more flexibility when an Evo route does not work out as expected, although removing an upgrade means losing the benefits attached to it.

PlayStyles Lab and Player Customization

PlayStyles Lab

Attributes are not the only thing that determines whether a FUT card feels good in-game.

PlayStyles Lab returns in FC 27 as a recurring program beginning in Season 1, allowing eligible items to customize parts of their PlayStyle setup.

This year's version starts eligible items with selected PlayStyles already applied instead of building them entirely from scratch. Different PlayStyles can also have different acquisition requirements, with some requiring more time or effort to earn.

This fits FC 27's wider approach to player progression: upgrades are intended to preserve a player's identity rather than gradually turning every card into an identical endgame build.

Why PlayStyle+ Matters Even More in FC 27

FC 27 reduces the maximum number of PlayStyle+ on a single Player Item from five to three.

EA is also reducing the amount of overall Attribute and PlayStyle inflation across the year. While launch ratings are broadly comparable with FC 26, the gap between Base Items and late-cycle Campaign Items is intended to be significantly smaller by the end of the season.

That means the quality of your PlayStyle+ selection matters.

A card having more raw OVR does not automatically mean it will be the better fit for your squad. When comparing Evo paths, look at whether the upgrades improve the Attributes and PlayStyles that actually support that player's job on the pitch.

FC 27 is designed to reward more specialized Player Items rather than endlessly increasing every stat.

How Do Role++ Upgrades Work in FC 27?

Roles are also less restrictive in FC 27.

EA confirmed that all Special Items released throughout FC 27 will receive Role++ familiarity in every Role available at their Primary and Secondary Positions.

This is a significant difference from previous FUT squad building.

It means Special Items should be easier to fit into different tactical setups without needing a specific Role++ upgrade just to make the card function properly.

As a result, when judging a new Special Item or Evo route, Attributes and PlayStyles may deserve more attention than chasing a single tactical Role upgrade.

Live Player Growth: Ones to Watch

Evolutions are upgrades you control. Live Items work differently because their upgrades are tied to campaign rules and real-world football.

The first major FC 27 example is Ones to Watch.

Ones to Watch FC 27

OTW Player Items below 83 OVR are initially boosted to 83 OVR, while players already rated 83 or higher retain their Base Item Attributes. Every OTW also receives at least 60 Pace and Role++ familiarity for all Roles in position.

OTW cards can then receive:

+1 OVR for every qualifying:

  • Team of the Week appearance
  • Star Performer appearance
  • Player of the Month item

They can also receive a one-time +1 OVR through the Wins to Watch mechanic if their club wins three of its next six domestic league matches starting from September 18. The OTW player does not need to appear in those matches for the wins to count.

There is one detail worth remembering: an OTW upgrade does not necessarily copy the exact stats of that player's highest-rated TOTW, POTM or Star Performer card. Each qualifying performance item instead gives the OTW version a +1 OVR upgrade.

OTW upgrades are based on the 2026/27 domestic season.

Destined for Glory Live Upgrades

Destined for Glory FC 27

Destined for Glory is the next major live progression system in FC 27 Season 1.

The campaign launches on September 25, 2026, and runs through October 9.

However, upgrade tracking begins from September 18.

Destined for Glory Player Items can receive upgrades throughout the football season based on real-world performances in their domestic leagues. Their upgrade milestones vary depending on the player's position, with attacking and midfield players connected to goals and assists while defensive players use clean-sheet-based milestones.

This is different from OTW.

OTW responds to qualifying performance-based FUT items and its Wins to Watch condition, while Destined for Glory follows its own position-based real-world performance milestones.

Always check the rules for the specific live Campaign rather than assuming every live card upgrades in the same way.

What Does NOT Count as Player Growth?

A few FC 27 systems can make a Player Item more useful or valuable without actually representing permanent player development.

Chemistry Styles

Chemistry Styles can affect how a player performs within your squad, but they are not the same as an Evolution or live upgrade. They do not permanently develop the underlying Player Item.

For a player growth guide, Chemistry should therefore be treated as squad optimization, not progression.

Holographic Items

Holographic Player Items are also not stronger versions of the card.

EA confirms that a Holographic item's player and on-pitch Attributes remain unchanged compared with its normal equivalent. Their differences are rarity and visual presentation.

Eligible Special Items at 87 OVR or below can appear as Regular Holographics, while eligible items rated 88 OVR and above can appear as Pristine Holographics.

They may have additional Gallery or Item Score value, but that does not make them better in matches.

How to Choose the Best Player Growth Path in FC 27 FUT

FC 27 rewards planning more than simply taking every available upgrade.

Before committing a player to an Evo, consider four things:

  • Check the important Attributes, not just OVR.
A smaller rating boost that improves Pace, finishing, passing, defending or dribbling in the areas your player actually needs can be more useful than a larger but poorly distributed upgrade.
  • Look at the PlayStyles.
With only three PlayStyle+ slots available on a Player Item, the right PlayStyles can define how useful the card feels in-game.
  • Preview future Evolutions.
Use Evolution Chain Preview to see whether the upgraded card still qualifies for another Evo before locking in the first one.
  • Decide what the player is supposed to become.
Evolution Pathways and reward choices mean the same starting Player Item can develop differently. Build around your squad and tactical needs rather than automatically choosing the path with the biggest numbers.

That is the biggest change in how FC 27 approaches FUT progression: player growth is becoming a route you plan, not just a boost you collect.

FC 27 Player Growth FAQ

Can players improve in FC 27 Ultimate Team?

Yes. Player Items can receive permanent upgrades through Evolutions, while eligible live Campaign items can receive automatic upgrades when their campaign conditions are met.

Can you chain Evolutions in FC 27?

Yes. FC 27 includes Evolution Chain Preview, which lets you preview multiple Evos and see which ones remain available after projected upgrades are applied.

Can you use the same Evolution more than once?

Some Evolutions are Repeatable. The same Player Item can enter the same Repeatable Evolution again if it still satisfies the entry requirements. Some Repeatable Evolutions also have cooldowns.

Are FC 27 Evolutions permanent?

Completed Evo upgrades stay on the Player Item unless you choose to remove the Evolution. FC 27 allows you to remove the latest Evo or all applied Evolutions, but removal cannot be undone.

Does an Evolution make a player untradeable?

Submitting a Player Item to a standard Evolution makes it untradeable while that Evo is applied. If the card was originally tradeable, removing all Evolutions restores its tradeable status.

What are Training Camp Evolutions?

Training Camp Evolutions passively upgrade an eligible player over a set period. The player cannot be used while in Training Camp but returns after the timer finishes and the upgrade is claimed.

How many PlayStyle+ can a player have in FC 27?

A Player Item can have a maximum of three PlayStyle+ in FC 27.

Do Holographic cards have better stats?

No. Holographic Player Items have the same on-pitch Attributes as their standard counterparts. Their differences are visual presentation and rarity.

Do Ones to Watch cards upgrade in FC 27?

Yes. FC 27 OTW Items receive +1 OVR for each qualifying TOTW, Star Performer or POTM appearance and can earn one additional +1 OVR through Wins to Watch.

Conclusion

Player progression in FC 27 Ultimate Team gives you more control over how your squad develops. Evolutions, Pathways, live upgrades, and PlayStyle customization all give familiar cards more room to stay useful throughout the season.

The key is simple: don’t chase OVR alone. Check the actual stat boosts, PlayStyles, and future Evo options before committing, and you’ll get much more value out of every upgrade.
